Creature Subtype: Suidae

Introduction

Boars are massive, bulky creatures with short, thin legs, a large trunk, and small hindquarters. They have thick, short necks that are nearly immobile, and the region behind their shoulderblades rises to a hump. They have well-developed canine teeth, two of which protrude as tusks from the mouths of adult males.

Feeding Habits

Boars are almost as omnivorous as humans and other humanoid races. They use their tusks to dig up mushrooms, tubers, roots, and bulbs. In winter they will root through the snow for nuts, berries, and seeds, and in the summer they will consume leaves, bark, twigs, and shoots. Boars will also eat a wide variety of small animals: worms, insects, mollusks, fish, rodents, eggs, lizards, snakes, frogs, and even carrion. Boars living near civilized areas can be a nuisance because they will not hesitate to eat crops such as potatoes, as well as garbage.

Disposition and Social Habits

Boars are social animals, living in groups known as sounders. Theses sounders are female-dominated, led by an elder matriarch. Males leave the sounder when they mature, and usually roam alone or in small groups. During mating season males will aggressively fight other males for the right to mate with the fertile sows in a sounder, using their tusks against other like weapons.

Habitat

Boars live in a wide variety of habitats and can be found all over Negaria, even in the frigid regions of Tyedu and in the mountains above Galdos and Deglos, but seem to prefer mixed forests as can be found in the nation of T'Nanshi. They are also found further south in M'Chek, where sounders are sometimes composed of a mix of wild boars and formerly domesticated pigs who were either released or escaped from captivity.

Fylgia

Most compatible: Dire Boar

  • Boars are descended from the larger, more savage, prehistoric dire boar.

Other notes

Though historical records are scarce and not detailed, it is thought that boars were one of the first animals to be domesticated. According to their oral history, after commanded by Mikon to scatter and spread across Negaria, some Romini tribes eventually returned to where he had been imprisoned and founded the city of Mikona. During this migration, some of the tribes who passed through the forests of T’Nanshi captured boars there and brought them along. It is from this stock of captured boars that the first pigs were supposedly domesticated.
