A world of steel and magic where no one race or philosophy predominates,
and heroes from all perspectives battle to further their cause and make a name for themselves.

Avlis is implemented as a persistent world for the Neverwinter Nights (NWN) role-playing game.

Getting Started in Avlis

Step 1: Make sure your NWN game is Avlis compatible.

As of this writing Avlis uses not only the original NWN game but also the Shadows of Undrentide (SoU) expansion pack and the Hordes of the Underdark (HotU) expansion pack as well. All three of these pieces of software will be necessary to play on Avlis.

Avlis is currently running on the 1.69 version of Neverwinter Nights so you might need to download the patch first.

Check whether your computer configuration is compatible with the system requirements for NWN, as well.

Step 2: Download the necessary hakpaks.

Avlis uses custom content such as original items and creatures as well as special files that allow one to explore tree cities, drylands, and hillocks. None of this content is in NWN – the game must be supplemented with special files called .hak files that are placed in the directory NeverwinterNights/NWN/haks. The easiest way to jump into Avlis is to go to check the Needed Files page of the Wiki.

Step 3: Register as a member of the forums and sign up for the newsletter.

The Avlis forums at www.avlis.org offer a wealth of information as well as the chance to meet and game with other players. You can gain a lot of useful information in the forums that will further enhance your Avlis experience.

Don't forget to sign up for our newsletter, The Avlissian, to receive news, rumors, game updates, player interviews, contests, and announcements about special events!

Step 4: Acquaint yourself with the rules.

Before creating your character, read the Rules Summary. A detailed breakdown of the rules pertaining to Avlis can be found in the Rules article. Another document that will assist you as a new player on Avlis is the Avlis Player Guide.

The Rules are mandatory, while the Avlis Player Guide is essentially an introduction to the specifics of the world of Avlis.

Step 5: Connect to Avlis.

IMPORTANT: In the absence of the Master Server, Avlis uses its own authentication server - the Alpha Server. You need to authenticate with the Alpha Server before you can log on to Avlis. Please visit the Alpha Server FAQ forum topic for more information.

To connect to Avlis, start NWN and press Play, followed by Multiplayer and then Join LAN Game. After that click Direct Connect and type the address for the server you wish to connect to. As of this writing, there are nine servers. You may also use Direct Connect in the Join Multiplayer option, which will save each server you join to your History tab to make future connections easier:

</noinclude>

Overview

Avlis presently consists of nine servers, each running within its own virtual machine. Each server comprises a specific part of the World of Avlis and player characters can travel from one to another just as simply as traveling from one in-game area to another - provided they know the way, of course! Most servers contain quests and dungeons appropriate for new characters, with the exception of M'Chek and Wilderness.

To connect to Avlis, launch Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition and select Multiplayer. After that click Join LAN Game and type the address for the server (see below). You may also use the player-contributed Direct Connect Launchers.

Tip: You can communicate with other players across all Avlis servers. Once In Game, type /who to find out who else is online. Type /help chat to send a message to anyone on any Avlis server. Type /lfp on to join the inter-server OOC chat channel.

Access Requirements

IMPORTANT: Please ensure you are registered before you log into any of the Avlis servers. Please read the transfer instructions if you are a returning player (i.e. you used to play on NWN v. 1.69 and want to continue playing the same characters).

Passwords have been removed from Avlis. The world is now open to all that wish to join. However, you are still required to initially register, read the Rules, and commit to the philosophy of play on Avlis.

Custom content is automatically downloaded as soon as you log into an Avlis Server.

Server Connection Information

If you have trouble connecting with one of the servers below, you can try replacing ee.avlis.org with the IP address: 154.27.80.212

Mikona

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5132

This was the first Avlis server to be built and contains the M'Chekian capital city of Mikona, and its immediate surroundings. This is the Southernmost point of the continent of Negaria.

M'Chek

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5131

The M'Chek server consists of the Human nation of M'Chek (minus the capital city Mikona and its outskirts), as well as the Southern reaches of the Blandenberg Protectorate.

Wilderness

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5133

This server consists of T'Nanshi's forest floor, the Northern reaches of the Blandenberg Protectorate and the South-Westernmost borderlands of Drotid.
Note: The Wilderness server once also comprised the areas that now make up the M'Chek server, thus references to the Wilderness made on the forums prior to March 2009 may also refer to that part of the world.

Elysia

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5134

This server contains the Fey city of Elysia and its surrounding land, as well as the sinister and deadly Forest of Midnight.

Ferrell

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5126

This server presents the Halfling nation of Ferrell and the many eerie and mysterious locations within.

Le'Or

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5124

The Le'Or server is comprised of the Elven city of Le'Or - capital of T'Nanshi - and the Canopies, connecting Elven settlements to swaths of wild forests and mountains. From the Avariel royal court to the Nightfang clan lands, adventure awaits.

Deglos

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5125

This server contains the Dwarven and Gnomish nation of Deglos - both the cavernous cities and mines below and the mountain peaks above, as well as the Westernmost borderlands of Drotid.

Visimontium

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5129

This server contains the mountain city of Visimontium, seat of Andrinor's Trust and the High Mage Council.

Underdark

Server Address: ee.avlis.org:5130

This server contains the extensive network of caverns and tunnels that run deep below much of Avlis, including the Adomkuro trading settlement of Verloghokbol.

Passwords have been removed from Avlis. The world is now open to all that wish to join. However, you are still required to initially register on the Alpha Server, read the rules, and commit to the philosophy of play on Avlis.

It is highly recommended that you start on Le'Or T'Nanshi. This server has been intentionally set up with special areas for starting characters. Mikona and Elysia are also good starting locations. After you have gained some experience and learned a bit about the world of Avlis, then trips to the other servers will be more survivable. All of the servers now share the same hakpaks, which can be found on the Needed Files page of the Wiki. You will not need to download more content when changing servers.

If you have trouble connecting directly by typing in one of the above addresses, then replace world.avlis.org with the numerical IP address: 198.101.12.59

Step 6: Make a character.

You can make as many characters as you want on Avlis. You might play the same character all the time, you might begin with one character, decide to retire him and start another, or you may rotate between a multitude of characters as suits your fancy. Before making a character it is recommended that you read Gruush's guide to roleplaying in multiplayer NWN as well as "Character Creation" section of the Avlis Player Guide.

Step 7: Log on and play!

Tip: Looking for party? Check the Avlis General Discussion forum, as well as the Avlis Event Calendar on the bottom of the forum page, and by all means stop by on Avlis Chat.

Step 8: Have your questions answered.

You may come up with some questions when trying to log in to Avlis, or when something happens in Avlis that you do not understand. Worry not! The answers may be found in the FAQ thread on the Avlis forums. Alternatively, you can always visit our IRC channel and get directions to the relevant forum/wiki section.
