Biography

Early Life

Vanar grew up on the outskirts of Mikona helping his father tend his shop. His father deals in spices, herbs and some basic medicines such as those which help lower fever, aid digestion and the like. Vanar filled the simple orders and also helped keep the books once he was old enough to do so. For most of his life Vanar assumed that he would continue working with his father and one day take over running the shop. One thing turned him from that destiny and that was the manifestation of his gift for magic. Vanar found that he could sway the decisions of others with the right combination of words and small gestures. Customers made purchases from him that they would never have made from his father, sometimes after they had refused him flatly only minutes before. This ability also occasionally saved him from a bullying and he was grateful for this as he knew that he would have been over-matched in strength. Most of those who accosted him were rough young men who labored hauling goods or doing other physical work and were resentful of what they perceived as Vanar’s easy lifestyle.

An entertainer named Shent who frequently passed through the neighborhood was present for one of these episodes and recognized the enchantment for what it was. He convinced Vanar that he should head into Mikona and seek training in the art so that as it manifested further he would learn control and not harm himself or others. From the knowledge that Shent displayed during their talks Vanar came to realize that he was likely more than he appeared but the man would never reveal what lay beneath his familiar role. Vanar’s father at first objected to the idea of allowing him to leave, even denying the fact of Vanar’s gift and maintaining that his son just had a way with people. After some thought and long conversations with Shent he realized that he was deluding himself and that Vanar would be best served by schooling in magic.

Arrival in Mikona

This new chapter in Vanar’s life was almost ended before it had begun. The number of people in need in Mikona was surprising to him and he met someone his first day there who had seen their entire family killed by bandits. He decided to get out of the city for a while in order to collect his thoughts and determine in what way he might best learn to help the unfortunates he had seen. His father may have been strict but he was a good man and had raised Vanar to be the same. While he was out exploring the farms near the city he was set upon by a fire beetle. He had used magic once before to put some rats to sleep as they came after him and in a panic he tried the same with the beetle. The spell had no effect on the insect and worse yet he cast it too close and managed to put himself to sleep instead. The beetle killed him.

Choosing his Path

When Vanar returned to the living he was shocked as much by his return to life as he had been at his exit from it. Many thoughts and feelings vied for attention in his mind. He wondered why he had been sent back and he lost almost all confidence in his ability with magic. Vanar began a search for the meaning of his return, spending time in reflection and meditation. He eventually found what he was looking for in the teachings of Dra’Nar and committed himself to them, spending time in service to him as a monk and helping as he could those who needed it. The disciplines of mind and body that he learned during this time helped him to grow in confidence and examine his life more objectively.

Around this time Vanar was befriended by Fergus Goodmane, archmage of the White Order of the Light. As a result of talking with Fergus he realized that that he was drawn to the ideals of the Order and he returned in earnest to his study of magic. After thinking on it for some time and exploring his other options Vanar chose to become an initiate of the White Order of the Light. His conversations with Fergus led him to realize that he had at times ill used his gift and that he had coerced others against their will without truly appreciating what he was doing. Vanar focused his energy on learning spells of protection and on those which would enhance his martial skills and those of his allies, forgoing the enchantments which had allowed him to rob others of their free will.

Recent Travels and Associations

Vanar's travels have instilled a new-found love for the beauty of nature and he delights in the rolling hills of Ferrell and the arboreal majesty of T'Nanshi. The grandeur of the mountains around Visimontium struck him immediately on his first trip there. One of his favorite pastimes in Visimontium is to make his way up one of the high ridges around the city and settle there for his meditations. The scenery of Visimontium and the presence of the White Order tower are key reasons that Vanar has decided to make his residence there even though it makes the trip back home to visit his father in M'Chek a long one. Since making his residence there he has joined the Sentinels of Visimontium so that he may lend his aid to keeping the city safe and secure.

Vanar is a now a Magus of the White Order of the Light, seeking to use his gifts to help others. He continues to practice his devotions to Dra’Nar and occasionally takes time to travel to the temple in Le’Or where he finds new strength in the time he spends there.

Appearance

Vanar chooses to dress simply. He frequently will wear his White Order robes or else his Sentinel's uniform when acting in his capacity as deputy. A holy symbol of Dra'Nar is prominently displayed about his neck. His prized staff will usually be carried with him and a slim wand will hang at his side. Over his shoulder a crossbow and quiver of bolts will be slung in case they are needed.

Bright emerald green eyes are his most distinguishing physical feature and his gaze is steady upon those he speaks with. Freckles lightly dot his face and his hair is brown with faint red highlights. The word most likely to come to mind when looking upon him is boyish, though there is a quiet maturity to his bearing that is at odds with this assessment. His light build contributes to his youthful appearance. No one looking on him would mistake him for having an abundance of physical strength but his movements are quick and deft.

Demeanor and Outlook

Vanar is personable and can be quite engaging but many times he prefers listening to talking. He will speak when he feels he has something of worth to contribute and will generally not speak or act without due consideration of the consequences. A friendly smile is his usual greeting to those he meets whether they are a well known companion or a first time acquaintance.

He approaches problems as methodically as possible but will take action immediately once there is a clear path to a solution. When there is a threat to the welfare of others or a task of importance to be undertaken Vanar will devote his energy and concentration to what needs to be done. Though generally cheerful he takes such matters seriously and his manner will reflect this.

His actions are guided not just by an intellectual philosophy but also by his conscience and instincts. Vanar feels strongly that he has a duty to use his abilities for the good of others. He feels called to this path as a response to the divine favor shown to him most clearly in his first return from death. Each day as he starts his morning meditation he endeavors to embrace this path anew.
