== History of the Sword of Toran ==

'''The Sword of Toran''' began its long history under the command of Emperor Joral Kuras as one of the many legions of the [[Kurathene|Kurathene Empire]]. A knight Legion of the Prefecture of Epillycia, the Sword of Toran carried the Emperor's word across the Empire, serving well in Tyedu, Dubunat, and even Drotid. After the great Emperor's death in 1825 OD, the Sword splintered out just like many other Legions, many of its soldiers returning to their homelands. Two of the Sword's most prominent commanders, '''Michael al'Aere''' and '''Roland Barre''' travelled south, to the human nation of [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]], carrying the banner of the Sword with them.

In [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]], the two soldiers founded a martial academy in an effort to teach the M'Chekians how to fight honorably and with superior tactics. The nation itself was embroiled in a [[M%27Chek-T%27Nanshi_War|war]] with the elven nation of [[T%27Nanshi|T'Nanshi]], and the two soldiers joined M'Chek's forces and headed up an elite fighting unit. Over time, others were impressed by the Sword's tenacity and power in battle, and the Sword's ranks swelled. It was at this time that the Church of Toran stepped forward and mandated that the Sword of Toran would uphold Toran's Plan as his chosen Holy Order on Avlis.

It was around this time that the government of [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]] elected the Sword as the sole enforcer of national laws, and entrusted Toran's faithful with the policing of the nation. The Sword undertook this task with their usual dedication and professionality, and over time they earned the respect and praise of many a M'Chekian.

Following the close of the [[M%27Chek-T%27Nanshi_War|M'Chek-T'Nanshi War]] and the creation of the [[Guild:_The_M%27Chekian_Guards|M'Chekian Guards]], the Sword's services were no longer necessary in M'Chek, and its members decided it was time for them to return home, to [[Kurathene]], to help protect their countrymen. The Holy Legate '''Heldor''' remained behind to head up the M'Chekian branch of the Sword, and ensure that order was maintained in [[Mikona]].

Led by [[Justicar]] and Legate '''Cyrenious Whitehaven''', the Sword of Toran has returned home to [[Kuras]] in order to help stay the ravages of the [[Kurathene_War_System|Fief Wars]] and ensure that civilians are protected and battles follow certain guidelines for the benefit of all Kurathenes. To fulfill that end, the Sword founded the '''Quorum of Kurathene''' as an official moderated meeting place and negotiating body between the fiefs to try and promote peaceful settlements to regional differences in the Empire.

Monk Orders

The vast majority of Avlissian monks are members of some form of order. These orders teach various systems of beliefs and attitudes towards the world. Many different kinds of orders exist. Commonly, orders are attached to a deity, particularly the more lawful or neutral deities like [[Valok]], [[O'Ma]], and [[Toran]] will be likely to have orders with varying amounts of attachment to the official church of their patron god or goddess. However, some orders do not follow the teachings of any particular deity, but rather they attach themselves to an abstract philosophy that claims to transcend the need for deities and even the planes themselves. Two prime examples of this are the famous Order of The Will and the Order of The Way, who hold opposing ideas on life and existence. There is still a third different kind of monastic order. These orders affix themselves to either a sacred place renown for its natural beauty, like a mountain or a forest, or they recognize some powerful figure of nature or magic, like a dragon or a sphinx, to be their teacher.

What follows is a list of some monk orders and monasteries of Avlis, but is by no means comprehensive. It may be expanded to include any order that is not explicitly secret. Some of these orders may be mythic, or no longer exist.

'''Hurine''' is the patron goddess of merchants and business people. Often, those who deal in business matters will have a small statue of her somewhere in their shop or on their person when traveling. Though the majority of her worshippers are laymen who deal in some sort of mercantile trade, Hurine does have clerics and temples, though they are few.

Hurine's temples can be lavish, though they are often small and unassuming. Normally, they act as small centers where business folk can come to ask for success and financial rescue. The clerics of Hurine are often seen as great financial advisors and shrewd dealers in all sorts of business, and many consult them for advice on these matters.

Clerics of Hurine are easily recognized by their light colored robes with dark brown or golden trim. They are not quite as numerous as other clerics from the various churches, but it is generally easy to find at least one or two in any city. Larger cities tend to have greater numbers of them. In the southern part of Avlis, they are not as common as they are in the [[The Seven Cities|Seven Cities]], and parts of the [[The Kurathene Empire|Kurathene Empire]], though they can still be found.

War, evil, or even peace, and goodness do not really concern the creator of the Dracon. His message is one of order. If everyone can go about their business in an orderly way, things will run much smoothly, whether they are wars, or good deeds. Absolute discipline is the key. Non-conformity is a sin in '''Toran''''s eyes. A Law and order rule above all, and to disobey that order is to become chaotic in their eyes.

Discipline. Strict, unflagging, unfailing discipline, this is the path to enlightenment in the eyes of Toran. There is no other way. The only way to bring about the stillness that comes when one's thoughts and actions are controlled is to enforce discipline on oneself and on the outside world. The chaos of the world can "leak" into a person. If one is in a quiet environment, it is much easier to become quiet along with it. However, if the environment is full of chaos, then that chaos will seep into the person causing them to lose control of their discipline. Even another person's random thoughts can seep into nearby people and cause them to think chaotically.

Toran is the ultimate Lawful Neutral warrior. His plan is simple: complete and total order, regardless of who prospers and who gets hurt. Toran does not care about people's feelings or aspirations. He only cares that everything fits properly into everything else. Battles are fought by the followers of Toran in all wars on the face of Avlis. They are highly prized as mercenaries because they will fight for almost anyone, and they do so in an extremely well disciplined and organized shock troop manner.

If there's a war that Toran's [[Cleric|clerics]] cannot stop, then they will do their best to make sure it's fought in an orderly fashion as opposed to having chaotic assemblies of ragtag troops going at it. Toran does not much care whose side you're on, or even why you are fighting as long as the cause requires an orderly military solution. This also applied to the [[Human|human]]/[[Elf|elf]] war. Toran does not care. Toran's troops are often found on BOTH sides of any conflict, especially when both societies see some merit in keeping order at times, which is true of both humans and elves.

They are not so prevalent in this war, though the clerics of Toran are VERY common in the [[Kurathene|Kurathene Empire]] where they often work for nobles' armies. Toran has a number of his own [[Monk|monk]] orders, and yes, he does respect monks for their discipline. Everyone fits into Toran's plan, according to him, and yes, the clerics do preach this. The clerics are seen as troops in Toran's grand army of order, and they act as such. They even have military ranks within their clergy.

Good and evil are all relative. There really is no one undisputable "Good" with a capital "G". What's good for one is evil for another. Many of these so-called "good gods" preach that you must give aid to others so that they can go onward. The thought here is that giving aide is always a good thing. They are wrong. You know that bum on the street that everyone has encountered somewhere in their lives? The bum that asks you for money all the time? Giving him money is a "good" thing right? After all, you are helping the poor soul. Wrong. How do you know what that man will do with the money? What if he uses it for "evil" purposes, like hiring an assassin? What if he amasses enough money from begging to buy him an entire fiefdom, which he then uses to make war on the very people who donated the money? Who's to say he won't do that?

Valok is the father-god of Orcs. They follow his mindset.... that it's ok to get what you want, but don't make people hate you in the process. Having friends can be very helpful for getting what you want later. Now, if someone screws you over, by all means, take care of him or her. But not in public! Ideally, we can all get along with everyone else if only they just wouldn't get in our way. We don't want to destroy them. We just want to win as much as we can.

The followers of gods that are dubbed "good" or "neutral" all have one major problem. They do not give enough time to the development of the self. But what does this have to do with enlightenment, and how does one achieve it?

Enlightenment is within. If doing something for someone else will not help YOU, then you have no business doing it. Only self-discipline and devotion can help YOU. Focusing on things outside of yourself is a waste of time, because you are not responsible for anyone else but you. "Self maintenance is a monumental task." the holy saying goes. You have ENOUGH things to do with improving your own spiritual predicaments. What do you get by doing things for the spiritual predicaments of others? Absolutely nothing with the possible exception of maybe a "good" feeling.

The one who has disciplined their mind and calmed their inner senses will know Valok's Glory and Will. Glory is a better term to describe a "good" feeling that is directed inward. Valok hails glory. We should all strive for glory for it is Valok's way of condoning our actions and telling us that we are making improvements within ourselves.

So how should others be treated? Smile. If others are expecting a sense of "good", then give that to them. It is not wrong to give someone something if it benefits you in the end. It is ESPECIALLY not wrong to give someone something when it is an empty thing and you have lost nothing from giving it.

If there are people who do not approve of your self-improvement quest, then you should have understanding towards them. However do not let them walk all over you? Get around them. Intrigue was the tool Valok gave us to help ourselves when others will not allow it. If you cannot go through something, go around it. Compose yourself and be disciplined. Know that Valok approves of what you do and it is not becoming of one of his followers to be obtuse. An obtuse mind is not a disciplined one.

After the great Emperor's death in 1825 OD, the Sword splintered out just like many other Legions, many of its soldiers returning to their homelands. Two of the Sword's most prominent commanders, '''Michael al'Aere''' and '''Roland Barre''' travelled south, to the human nation of [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]], carrying the banner of the Sword with them.

In [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]], the two soldiers founded a martial academy in an effort to teach the M'Chekians how to fight honorably and with superior tactics. === The Justicars of Toran ===
Justicars originated in the lands of Toran Shaarda, where the centauroid race of dracon is dominant. The dracon live in a very hive-minded society, where all is done for the greater order of things. Non-conformity is a sin in Toran's eyes. Law and order rules above all, and to disobey that order is to become chaotic in their eyes.

The chaos of the Fairy War sparked the creation of the Justicars. The war began in T'Nanshi and quickly became in danger of spreading everywhere. In order to keep the fairies within their own country from fighting, the Dracon clerics of Toran decided it was time to employ some muscle. First, they made laws against participating in the fairy struggle within their borders. Next, they created the Justicars to enforce those laws... heavily.

The first Justices were Dracon warriors loyal to Toran who were charged with the task of quelling any struggle between the fairies in their nation. Once the war was finished, and the Great War started, their task expanded. They were told to keep the entire war away. Securing their lands against an onrush of Orc refugees was tough, and they almost did not manage. Many lives were lost on both sides, but in the end, the justicars prevailed and Toran Shaarda was saved.

After the war, the justicars were employed as a regular police force, at which point they began to expand. The first outside nation to realize their use was the Kurathene Empire. The Emperor, Kuras, took them in and allowed them to set up many churches to Toran on his lands. He knew that they would be excellent tools at enforcing whatever laws he made in his dominion, and he was correct. Until the end, Imperial law was enforced by the justicars, without question. Since then, many of them have taken up to serving the local lords, and the rest have started to spread to other nations. In this time period, non-dracon races have joined the organization. In Mikona, the Church of Toran is one of the largest in the city, and the justicars are welcome there.

Justicars like heavy armor, the heavier the better. Dracon are very strong creatures, and more than able to bear the weight, and this has carried over to the other races. The main weapon of the order is considered to be the longsword, though dracon have often employed greatswords as well.

The justicars have a definite hierarchy, which is the same as the hierarchy for the clerical church, though separate.

'''The Sword of Toran''' began its long history under the command of Emperor Joral Kuras as one of the many legions of the [[Kurathene|Kurathene Empire]]. A knight Legion of the Prefecture of Epillycia, the Sword of Toran carried the Emperor's word across the Empire, serving well in Tyedu, Dubunat, and even Drotid. After the great Emperor's death in 1825 OD, the Sword splintered out just like many other Legions, many of its soldiers returning to their homelands. Two of the Sword's most prominent commanders, '''Michael al'Aere''' and '''Roland Barre''' travelled south, to the human nation of [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]], carrying the banner of the Sword with them.

In [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]], the two soldiers founded a martial academy in an effort to teach the M'Chekians how to fight honorably and with superior tactics. The nation itself was embroiled in a [[M%27Chek-T%27Nanshi_War|war]] with the elven nation of [[T%27Nanshi|T'Nanshi]], and the two soldiers joined M'Chek's forces and headed up an elite fighting unit. Over time, others were impressed by the Sword's tenacity and power in battle, and the Sword's ranks swelled. It was at this time that the Church of Toran stepped forward and mandated that the Sword of Toran would uphold Toran's Plan as his chosen [[Category:Religious_Orders|Holy Order]] on Avlis.

It was around this time that the government of [[M%27Chek|M'Chek]] elected the Sword as the sole enforcer of national laws, and entrusted Toran's faithful with the policing of the nation. The Sword undertook this task with their usual dedication and professionality, and over time they earned the respect and praise of many a M'Chekian.

Following the close of the [[M%27Chek-T%27Nanshi_War|M'Chek-T'Nanshi War]] and the creation of the [[Guild:_The_M%27Chekian_Guards|M'Chekian Guards]], the Sword's services were no longer necessary in M'Chek, and its members decided it was time for them to return home, to [[Kurathene]], to help protect their countrymen. The Holy Legate '''Heldor''' remained behind to head up the M'Chekian branch of the Sword, and ensure that order was maintained in [[Mikona]].

Led by [[Justicar]] and Legate '''Cyrenious Whitehaven''', the Sword of Toran has returned home to [[Kuras]] in order to help stay the ravages of the [[Kurathene_War_System|Fief Wars]] and ensure that civilians are protected and battles follow certain guidelines for the benefit of all Kurathenes.

Laws bring Order from chaos and keep civilization from anarchy and oblivion. Toran strives to uphold structure and order so that all may benefit in safety and prosperity.

Strict, unflagging, unfailing discipline - this is Toran’s path to enlightenment. Never forget to keep sight of, and master, yourself. He who masters himself will be a slave to none. He who enforces discipline on himself and on the outside world brings Order within himself and those around.

Duty before self. Never forget that you have a responsibility to others just as Toran has a responsibility to guide all things to their proper place in the Order of His Plan. All things have a purpose in Toran’s Plan. Each cog in the great machine fits together, and as one turns so do the rest.

He who betrays his brother has forgotten his father's name. Toran's faithful find strength in standing together.

Never falter in your path, and do not forget that which you hold dear. To surrender one's faith is to lose a part of oneself and stray from the path of Toran.
