Prestige Classes

The coming of [[NWN:SoU]] and [[NWN:HotU]] have seen the introduction of prestige classes. Prestige classes are taken very seriously on Avlis. Even if your PC fulfills the requirements necessary to start gaining levels in a certain prestige class (such as arcane archer or assassin), he will not be able to do so until he also finds and completes a scripted quest tied to that class, or has it unlocked by another character who has achieved mastery (at least 10 levels) in the Prestige Class. The completion of this quest is to signify the pains that must be taken to get the specialized training necessary to gain levels in that prestige class. A player can also have a prestige class unlocked by a DM upon completing a special DM quest, or as a roleplaying award.

It is important to note that three of the prestige classes in NWN are not allowed in Avlis. The first is the Red Dragon Disciple. This is because red dragons are not indigenous to Avlis, so no native Avlissian character can have red dragon blood. The second is the Champion of Torm. Torm is not worshipped in Avlis, so he has no followers here. The third is the Harper Scout. The Harpers are an organization exclusive to the Forgotten Realms and therefore do not exist on Avlis.

Avlis also has its own special prestige classes. These are the [[Holy Warriors]] of the nine major gods (see Part II, Chapter 4, Section F). To be able to gain levels in these prestige classes you must have it unlocked by another character who has achieved mastery (10 levels or more) in the class, or by a DM. The IC process of becoming a Holy Warrior varies - some may require you to become a part of the in-game Holy Order, others will not. It is worth noting that the process of becoming a Holy Warrior can be arduous, lengthy, and involves some intense roleplay! The exception is the Paladin class, which is a base class. This means anyone can choose to gain levels in Paladin (so long as they meet the requirements); however, it is an Avlis rule that all Paladins are both worshippers and Holy Warriors of Gorethar.

I have always been a fan of RPGs, since the Ultima and Wizardry days. A good friend of mine, sozin, got me hooked up with Avlis after I bashed a few of the single player mods. My first PC was a boring dwarven fighter named Gru El Wanderito (I cheesed the name from Groo the Wanderer. Sorry.) After realizing he was a major sux0r, I started Siri Van Brockenhamm, a LG turned LE monk. Fun to play. She was part of the Order of the Dragon, as its headmistress, and now part of the Church of The'ton. After a few months, I pulled some more nerds into Avlis. Xarthna (Tasi), Silverfields (Benedict), and GreenElf (Valad) became addicted.

I have been a DM for 2 years. I love pwning J00. I have run plots for [[Guild:Children of the Dreadlord |Children of the Dreadlord]], [[Guild:TurivaIlnuru | Iskarim]], and [[Guild:BardicAcademyofVisimontium | Academy of Bardic Arts]]. When it was part of Galdos, Deglos was a monarchy. However, its principle inhabitants of [[gnome|gnomes]] and [[dwarf|dwarves]] have long since gained independence from Galdos to form their own nation. As a nation, Deglos is fairly neutral aligned, but they have some chaotic tendancies.

The government of Deglos is a system of trade guilds. Every trade imaginable has its own official national guild that concerns itself only with its own trade, and nothing else. These guilds never try to outdo another or achieve more personal gain than another guild. They merely exist for the purpose of existing and teaching their craft to anyone who wishes to learn, sometimes for a fee, sometimes not. When it becomes necessary in a time of war, or just when a decision of some sort is needed, the guilds pick representitives to send to a High Guildhall Convention (HGC). The is merely a means of setting some order among the inhabitants of Deglos. It can pass laws, though it rarely does. The individual guilds are more than able to handle their own members, and they do. If there is a war, the HGC will attempt to coordinate the interactions of the various armor, weapon, and other munition guilds to arm enough soldiers to fight. For the most part, this is unnecessary, however, because Deglos has enough of a volunteer army to meet its current needs fivefold.

As a society, the gnomes and dwarves live in close proximity. Often there is no distinction in their cities between where the dwarves live and where the gnomes live, although communities where one or the other race is sparse do exist. As individuals, dwarves tend more towards the "hard labor" crafts such as smithing, leatherworking, armoring, etc., whereas the gnomes tend to focus more on the "esoteric" crafts such as alchemy, astronomy, invention, and other sciences. This is not a rule, but it is the norm. Crossovers are found very often, i.e. gnomish blacksmiths, and dwarven astronomers. Society tolerates these without much trouble.

About one in ten dwarves and gnomes do not take well to any craft, or find an interest in working with their hands. These members of society may or may not be looked down upon, depending on their personal history, or the village they live in. But Deglos always has a use for them. It is these folk that tend to become the traders and the adventurers, as well as the ones who do the upkeep in the inhabited areas, i.e. the odd jobs. They may never happen to join any official crafting guild, and they usually don't seem to mind. On some occasions they may even move out of Deglos alltogether. It all depends on how their family units view them. Crafts are often passed down from father to son. It is much easier to enter a crafting guild if your father was in one. This is mainly true of the dwarves and their guilds. Gnomes are a bit more lenient because they are more likely to try to learn more than one craft, or as many crafts as they can. Multiple guild membership is not unheard of.

Although it is rare, the close proximity of the dwarves and gnomes sometimes produces unorthodox family units made up of a dwarven and gnomish spouse. These unions will sometimes bear children. Oddly enough, the children appear mostly dwarven, albeit slightly skinnier and lighter. Females however, do not grow beards when they are hybrid. These members of society are often referred to as "Stone dwarves" because it is thought they look more like their Galdossian cousins. This is true to some extent because the gnomish race evolved from the Galdossian dwarven race with the help of some magic. The Deglossian dwarves, although still dwarves, have changed a bit as well over the years. They became a bit more stockier and heavier than the Galdossian dwarves. When combined, the two races wind up making offspring closer in proportion to a Galdossian dwarf. The name "Stone dwarf" refers to the Galdossian xenophobic tendancy to stay in their own isolated nation of stone. Galdossians often refer to the Deglossian as "Grass dwarves" to reflect their more ebullient and sociable relations with creatures from the surface.

As a nation, Deglos is a heavy trader. Those one in ten non-craftsmen assure that. It trades most heavily with the Seven Cities, although that is often made difficult because it has to go through Dubunat to get there most easily. Unfortunately, the orcs of Dubunat are constantly plotting to take land from Deglos in an effort to dominate the continent and regain their ancestral homeland on the other side of the landmass. Skirmishes happen, but the gnomes are quite adept at protecting their caravans with the help of dwarven warriors. Trading with the Kurathene Empire also happens frequently, however the Deglossians often get very confused with all of the human manuvering and politicing among the nobles over there, so they often purposely trade less with the humans to not become involved. Trading with T'Nanshi is very brisk, second only to the Seven Cities. The relations between these two countries are very peaceful, though the Deglossians are careful not to meddle in elven affairs either.
Small hunting parties from Jechran and Tyedu are known to frequent the trading posts the gnomes have set up near their lands, but this amount of trade is somewhat negligible. Trade with Galdos ocurrs at times, but relations with them are often a bit cool, though not bad. The main reason why trade is not big with Galdos is because they really don't have any comodities to exchange.

In Deglos there are many cities or towns of varying size. Usually, each town is run by one of the crafting guilds. Often, the guild who runs the town actually makes sense to run it. For instance, a town run by the Mining Guild may be located near a large mine, and a neighboring town may be run by the Weaponsmithing Guild with a route between them. Other times, it is just what guild happened to be there at the time to run the place.

Most of these towns are underground within the caverns of Deglos. However, there are quite a few towns located either entirely or partially above ground. These tend to be near trading centers with other nations, however another place they often pop up is near a volcanic area where the gnomes are dwarves happen to be collecting a resource of some sort.

If you are not located in a town in one of the caverns, but instead you are walking in the caverns between the towns, you are considered to be in "The Deeps". This is just a generic term that the Deglossians use to represent an underground cavern area that is uninhabited (by them). Some of the caverns in Deglos can be quite dangerous, although the army regularly cleans out the heavily travelled ones. Still, one never knows when they will be walking through caverns to stumble upon a small guild village. The dwarves and gnomes of Deglos are very self-sufficient when they want to be, and can live far apart from other inhabited areas with no problems.

The relations between these two countries are very peaceful, though the Deglossians are careful not to meddle in elven affairs either.
Small hunting parties from Jechran and Tyedu are known to frequent the trading posts the gnomes have set up near their lands, but this amount of trade is somewhat negligible. Trade with Galdos ocurrs at times, but relations with them are often a bit cool, though not bad. The main reason why trade is not big with Galdos is because they really don't have any comodities to exchange.

In Deglos there are many cities or towns of varying size. Usually, each town is run by one of the crafting guilds. Often, the guild who runs the town actually makes sense to run it. For instance, a town run by the Mining Guild may be located near a large mine, and a neighboring town may be run by the Weaponsmithing Guild with a route between them. Other times, it is just what guild happened to be there at the time to run the place.

Most of these towns are underground within the caverns of Deglos. However, there are quite a few towns located either entirely or partially above ground. These tend to be near trading centers with other nations, however another place they often pop up is near a volcanic area where the gnomes are dwarves happen to be collecting a resource of some sort.

If you are not located in a town in one of the caverns, but instead you are walking in the caverns between the towns, you are considered to be in "The Deeps". This is just a generic term that the Deglossians use to represent an underground cavern area that is uninhabited (by them). Some of the caverns in Deglos can be quite dangerous, although the army regularly cleans out the heavily travelled ones. Still, one never knows when they will be walking through caverns to stumble upon a small guild village. The dwarves and gnomes of Deglos are very self-sufficient when they want to be, and can live far apart from other inhabited areas with no problems.

The word "guild" here is actually a misnomer. Guilds in Avlis refer to organizations run by players. While some indeed are crafting and trading guilds focused on certain skills like alchemy or blacksmithing, others are religious groups, druid circles, monk enclaves, or just groups of people with similar interests. Guilds are a great place to meet PCs who have interests in common with your PC. They are also good places to find other PCs to adventure with or gain support from.

While a DM sponsor is necessary when a guild is initially formed, after that the organization is wholly run by players. Guilds get their own private forum in the Avlis forums to discuss guild matters. They also get guild tokens, items they can wear that identify them as members of that guild. Some guilds even have their own uniforms and magic items.

To join a guild it is best to ask around about that guild in-game by speaking with PCs. If you are unable to find a member of that guild online (perhaps due to time zone differences), then it is acceptable to send a PM to the moderator of the guild's forum.

== Guild Types ==

There are '''TWO''' kinds of guilds on Avlis: One kind created by players, and one kind created by the people who made Avlis.

These differences are very practical, and you should keep them in mind.

=== Guild Type 1: Player-Made Guild ===

Examples of this are STEAL, AAAA, AAKN, Order of --Insert Here--.

Players conceived of and made these guilds. They thought them up, and they proposed them to DM's. The process then began for them to become manifest on the server.

ICly, the members of these guilds are only Players (NPC merchants don't count). So if Order of --Insert Here-- has 6 PC's, then ICly, the ENTIRE Order has 6 people in it.

If I were ever to write a sourcebook for Avlis, there would most likely not be any mention of these groups, for many reasons, possibly for legal ones too.

=== Guild Type 2: Built-In Avlis Guild ===

Examples of this are both M'Chek/T'Nanhsi armies, Raven, Shadow Dirks, Church of --Insert God name--, Elysia Defense Force (EDF), Government of --Insert country/city--, and eventually the Mage Orders

"Guild" is actually a bad name for these groups. They are not guilds. Guilds are groups that players use to get together socially and fullfill some common goal they have among themselves. These groups don't do that. These groups are an integral part of Avlis' religious, social, government, and magical structure. They are VERY different from typical guilds.

For example when you are in Raven, you are not part of a guild with 20 people in it. You are part of a guild with 20 *PC'* in it and about a thousand *NPC* thieves. Someone who is a high cleric of a church in an area is not just in control of 6 or 8 clerics played by PC's, they are in control of hundreds or thousands of followers of their god in their area, few of which are actually represented by NPC's.

Having said all that, depending on what kind of group you belong to (type 1 or 2), your group and its members will be treated differently by not necessarily the DM's, but the WORLD itself. The DM's are only a manifestation of that. Sometimes, for example, when something is done against a type 2 organization and it is only witnessed by a DM, the DM will report it to the PC leader of that organization. Why? Because there are THOUSANDS of members of that organization, and chances are that one of them saw you do it. Just because it was not a PC, doesn't matter. It's not DM favoritism, it's the world reacting to your actions. Still, the DM's only do it when it would make sense in that context.

== Creating Your Own Player Run Guild ==

There are some criteria that your guild must match before getting official guild status on Avlis:

# Your guild must fit in with the existing background of Avlis (this is the most important one)
# Your guild must have a serious group of players that are active enough to support its continued existence. Somewhere in the region of 8 to 10 characters that are on regularly is what you should aim for at the least.
# You need a DM sponsor. One of the DMs must agree to help you get organised as a guild and he will be there for the guild to ask the questions from.

A '''Dungeon Master (DM)''' is a player who uses the [http://www.nwnwiki.org/DM_client DM client] and controls [[Wikipedia:Non-player character|NPC]]s and other aspects of the game for [[Wikipedia:Player character|player character]]s.

For the Players, a DM is a DM - whatever word is placed before the word DM.
All of them are part of the Team, so please feel free to ask any of us if you need help.

A Senior DM is the main DM on a particular server, a Major DM is able to script and has been here for a while (compared with a Minor DM, who has not) and a Veteran DM has been here for ages. Lastly, an Apprentice DM has only just started.

I have always been a fan of RPGs, since the Ultima and Wizardry days. A good friend of mine, sozin, got me hooked up with Avlis after I bashed a few of the single player mods. My first PC was a boring dwarven fighter named Gru El Wanderito (I cheesed the name from Groo the Wanderer. Sorry.) After realizing he was a major sux0r, I started Siri Van Brockenhamm, a LG turned LE monk. Fun to play. She was part of the Order of the Dragon, as its headmistress, and now part of the Church of The'ton. After a few months, I pulled some more nerds into Avlis. Xarthna (Tasi), Silverfields (Benedict), and GreenElf (Valad) became addicted.

After a year and a half of playing Siri, I wanted to create a samurai-type character, and Jaii (press <ALT-F4> for full stats) was born. My goal with him is that he is a cowardly fighter from Redgate. He is training with the katana so he can master is fear of everything and become honorable.

I recently became a DM, so all my characters are pretty much on hold. DMing is way more fun, but I'll bring Siri out for evil, and Jaii if I want to get pwned.
