== Dominator (Valok, LE) ==
Dominators are closely associated with the Church of [[Valok]]. They often act as guards or emissaries for church business. Long ago, after the [[The_Great_War|Great War]], the Dominators of Valok were founded as a deterrent against [[orc]] mages. Their mission was to finish the extermination of mages that began with the great explosion they caused at the end of the war.
 
Even today, the dominators are not fond of arcane casters, though they are willing to accept their existence, unless they are an orc. They still see it as their holy mission given by Valok to eliminate any orc arcane casters, whether covertly or overtly.
 
Dominators see the Church of Valok as their key to self-advancement. By serving the Church, they plan to find favor in Valok's eyes, and by that gain riches and glory. Serving their god is the price they pay for their own advancement, and they do it gladly, whatever it entails.
 
It was rumored that the first dominator was Valok's own immortal son, though this has never been confirmed. Even so, dominators see themselves as the sons and daughters of Valok in the image of the first of their order, and they run their life accordingly to his philosophy: gain power through subtle means, prepare for everything, if all goes wrong, fight another day, do not break your word once given, but do not give more than necessary.
 
Uniformly, the dominators wear heavy armor and carry shields. They have been known to use longswords or bastard swords. In the old days, this was the best method of attack against mages, and it is still traditionally employed today.

Vilne Elor is an avariel wizard currently serving the Ebony Order of the Moon as the Senior Mage of Mikona, where he resides. Living in the Canvas, he spends much of his time there, sifting through scrolls and tomes while sipping on brandy all the while. It is a rare sight to behold when he is not in the robes of the Ebony, as he seems to take little seriously but the Order's progress as well as his own arcane studies.

Occasionally rude and absorbed in his own affairs, Vilne can be terse and inconsiderate of what others are thinking, particularly if they proffer opinions on ways in which he is an evil being when they hardly know them. This supposed morality annoys him to no end, even when he could hardly care what the opinions of others are. It also opens a path for one of his favorite past times of arguing, which he does for sport more than out of spite.

As a matter of principle (relating only to the few principles remaining), Vilne will generally not betray someone with an intimate knowledge of him, that is to say they possess some secret or another that might put him in dire straights at some point, unless he is sure that they'll end up a cold corpse without a chance of return to the Prime Material from whatever afterlife it is that claims them...or he's able to kick them into the Styx.

Born in Drotid near the ruins of Toostan-of-the-Clouds, Vilne quickly learned the hazards of rash action and has carried those lessons with him ever since. Son of the roguish pair of Ilsa and Nidreh, Vilne rejected their attempts to teach him their trade and instead earned apprenticeship to a wizard traveling with the small band of avariel.

The wizard, Bolaniel Lani, was an aging wizard of no outstanding skill with firmly held beliefs on what magic should be used for and also what types of magic should shunned. At times adamant in denying Vilne knowledge of certain magic, Bolaniel would war to the extent of his will to keep the boy from learning what he considered a largely evil school of the arcane, necromancy. Arguments continued at length between the two as the old wizard tried to teach the boy the fundamentals of arcane, lecturing at length on the basics and slowly teaching Vilne to recognize the runes of magya. Eventually, a compromise was reached and Vilne would be taught necromancy on the condition that he gave himself to the worship of a god that was opposed to undead, one of the common evils wrought by necromancy. Vilne was quick to accept the offer, though he stretched the compromise by applying himself as a follower of the Rebirth Order of Dagath’s faithful.

While irked that the boy had chosen a deity with no firm stance against the undead, the fact that the Order of Rebirth was largely opposed to the existence of the creatures did enough to settle the disquiet that Vilne’s interest in necromancy had created. Bolaniel made sure that Vilne was keeping with his end of the bargain, always keeping an eye on the boy. Vilne was eventually allowed to study that portion of the arcane that was previously denied to him after a year of being made to wait. Vilne gradually gained more and more interest in necromancy which was in turn made even greater by the wait. With much time having passed, he found himself desiring more and more of it and took to stealing away his Master’s spell book while Bolaniel slept to lightly trace the runes of some spell or another.

As Vilne was gaining enough Mastery to produce cantrips with ease, Bolaniel forbade his student further study of his favored school, necromancy, thinking it to be having an unwholesome effect on him. No longer a boy by any standard and thinking himself above such restrictions, Vilne warred against and took whatever sparse moments he had out from under the eye of his Master to engross himself in his favored studies, often sneaking away from camp to find a free moment.

Though one day, Vilne was found by Bolaniel, who swore an end to his studies and Apprenticeship. This fight was short lived, as a small party of kobolds managed to sneak up on the pair while they distracted themselves. Luckily, Bolaniel was able to drive them off while suffering only small injuries to himself and largely alive. Vilne, however, was still in a towering rage and would not all his years of study to have been in vain. He drew his dagger and quickly cut his former Master's throat before grabbing up the dying wizard's spell book and running back to the camp. Even today, he will still tell of Bolaniel's death at the hands of kobolds, as he initially felt a great deal of guilt and shame over the act.

The Order of Valok is a [[:Category:Religious_Orders|holy order]] devoted to the worship of [[Valok]]. Disciples of the Order have sworn to further their Patron's agenda and to spread his message across southern Negaria through strict adherence to his teachings, with an emphasis on the perfection of the self, and the well-deserved accumulation of fame, honor, and riches that attend this perfection, known collectively as ''Glory''. The Order stands as a single unified expression of Lord Valok, and is one of the primary instruments used to make manifest his will in [[M'Chek]], and beyond. 

The Order is largely composed of clergy and [[Dominator|Dominators]], but individuals from other walks of life have occasionally been granted membership if they are deemed worthy. Successful petitioners always worship Valok to the exclusion of all other gods, and take a keen interest in the governance of their fellow citizens. 

The lofty goals of the Order are often achieved through political means, but should this prove ineffective, more discreet methods are employed. The Order does not cloister itself away in seclusion: disciples are expected to be visible and active at all times. The elite members of the Order have at various times earned roles as Generals, Houseman, and officers of the M'Chekian [[Guild:The_M%27Chekian_Guards|Guard]] and [[Guild:_M%27Chekian_Army|Army]]. 

The Order is highly regimented. Unswerving discipline and obedience are not only expected, but required by Oath. 

The Order maintains close ties with High Priest [[Ther]] of the Temple of Valok and Dominator [[Japhen Jurok]], whose seat in the Noble House represents the interests of the Church of Valok. 

==History of the Order==

The Order of Valok was founded in [[Mikona]] by [[Fyren Tennimar]], who served as its first [[Holy_Guardian|Holy Guardian]]. From its earliest days, the Order played an active role in the national affairs of M'Chek; political involvement included a [http://www.avlis.org/viewtopic.php?f=138&t=16937 public call for banishment] of the [[Guild:Order of Gorethar|Order of Gorethar]], [[Image:MagnusKhan-army.jpg|250px|thumb|left|Magnus Khan, Slayer of the Gentleman (Pastel by Grace Dane-Unuldur)]]the group then entrusted to enforce law in Mikona, after it was revealed that they had declared war on a mage order and enlisted aid from the elves -- then at war with M'Chek -- in their cause. These actions not only paved the way for a [http://www.avlis.org/viewtopic.php?f=138&t=17634&p=125615 permanent restructuring] of law enforcement in Mikona, but also served as an augury of the Order's future work on behalf of the Nation's security. 

It was under the reign of Holy Guardian II, [[Sugriam Undlendenboam]], that the Order first distinguished itself as the Defenders of M’Chek, a role it has served countless times since. The fiend known as [http://www.avlis.org/viewtopic.php?t=20335 the Gentleman], a powerful Outsider with ties to the Shadow, Negative Energy, and Ethereal Planes - had risen once again, and desired nothing less than conquest of all Avlis. Entire armies fell prey to this creature, which was seemingly impervious to death, always returning with lich-like tenacity. Fear ran rampant among the populace, many of whom were scared to leave their homes, [[Image:Dala.gif|150px|thumb|right|Commander Wennen]]and it seemed there was no hope - that is, until the Order of Valok managed to recover the Sword of Severing from far-off [http://www.tairisnadur.com/ Tairis'nàdur]. Dominator [[PCs:Khan%2C_Magnus|Magnus Khan]], armed with the powerful sword and knowledge of the creature's True Name, severed the beast's ties to the planes from which it derived power, and then [http://www.avlis.org/viewtopic.php?t=40911 destroyed the shadow fiend] once and for all with a mighty swing that was widely celebrated and [[The_Fall_of_the_Gentleman|commemorated in verse]]. 

Khan, whose fame spread wide after the event, continued to make a name for himself as a Captain in the M'Chekian Army. He was named Holy Guardian III, and presided over the final years of the M'Chek/T'Nanshi War; a tumultuous time, certainly, but a time that offered opportunity to men - and women - willing to prove their worth in the face of tremendous odds. [[Dala_Wennen|Dala Wennen]] was one such woman, and her rapid rise through the ranks of the elite Alpha Corps is well documented in her [http://www.avlis.org/viewtopic.php?p=542795 memoirs]. Eventually ascending to Commander of the Corps, she engineered several great victories with a tactical mind rivaled by few. 

Wennen, sensing that the territorial gains could still be made in Fishaven, desperately pushed for a military resolution to the War, but the Government instead opted for a diplomatic one. Khan successfully negotiated the peace treaty, and the conflict was finally put to an end, after decades of slaughter. In honor of their achievements, Commander Wennen and Captain Khan were memorialized on a monument erected in Mikona's Government District. As a result of her exceptional war record, Wennen was offered (and accepted) a position as Housewoman in the M'Chekian Common House. Recognizing that there was still a need for a police unit to manage postwar M'Chek, Wennen suggested creation of the [[Guild:The_M%27Chekian_Guards|M'Chekian Guards]], an elite unit tasked with defensive operations and law enforcement. Wennen later stepped down from her House post to accept command of the newly created [[Guild:_Blackhawk_Company|Blackhawk Company]], a special operations division of the M’Chekian Army tasked with clearing the [[Underdark]] for colonization and farming. She served with distinction until her disappearance in July 2163. [[Image:Staahl.jpg|127px|thumb|right|Commander Staahl]]Despite the loss of Wennen, the Order would not be deprived of political power for long: with the passing of [[NPCs:Arthur_Jenkins|Houseman Jenkins]], a special election was called to fill two vacant seats, and Khan, having formerly been declared a National Hero, had no trouble securing the Northwest Commons seat. 

Under Khan's leadership the Hall of Valok -- the Order's residence, chapel, and meeting hall in the Mikona Temple District -- was constructed at the site of the Temple of [[Angadar]], which had remained boarded up ever since the Church of Angadar [http://www.avlis.org/viewtopic.php?f=138&t=93702 was convicted] of conspiracy and treason against M'Chek. With his newly won political office requiring his full attention, Khan ceded leadership of the Order to priestess [[PCs:Seka_Ravenswylde|Seka Ravenswylde]], who was to become its fourth Holy Guardian. 

Under Ravenswylde, the Order continues to focus on national security while increasing its political influence. The Order was lionized for its critical role in the defeat of the Great Wyrm Tharul'Zhannadar and his force of pyrite dragons, a terrible menace that had plagued the nation and was powerful enough to have destroyed [[Equaloria_Keep_and_Dunster_Commons|Equaloria Keep]]. After [http://www.avlis.org/viewtopic.php?f=136&t=91381 leading the efforts] to raise money for the keep’s restoration, members of the Order took to the seas to pursue the dragons to their island lair. Khan, recently promoted to General, fought alongside Commander Staahl and Dominator Evershield, all of whom had key roles in the invasion force. Evershield was part of the Elite Unit that directly confronted the great dragon and is fond of recalling how he drove his blade deep into the monstrous wyrm time and time again until it eventually collapsed in a pool of its own blood. Evershield would soon thereafter take the hand of Lady Emilia Finmaegen in marriage, and with Ravenswylde presiding over the ceremony, was elevated to the ranks of the nobility, becoming Lord Jared Evershield of [[Finmaegen Keep]]. 

The Order continues its tradition of excellence to this day. With the help of new generation of ambitious young aspirants, there is no doubt that its best days lie ahead, and that the Order will continue to play a leading role in shaping the future of Negaria.

''True lycanthropes'' are born with the ability to convert between forms. They can do this at will and are not dependent on any triggering factors.

''Afflicted lycanthropes'' are pretty much the same, except that they were not born with this ability but rather obtained it through being bitten or scratched by another lycanthrope. For them, it is a disease. These lycanthropes most often do not have full control over their form changes, and can be forced to change sometimes through triggers.
