This treatise covers the use of diamonds in wand craft. Even the most novice artificer knows that diamonds are used to empower spells, but even experienced artificers my overlook delightful details of diamond use. Some of the details are subtle, like all diamonds increase the potency of the spell slightly, and others are repetitious and interesting - like how category two, three, and four diamonds provide one, two, and three additional castings of the spell regardless of what wand they are used in. By the end of this treatise, dear reader, you too will know the details about diamonds.

Sorting

The first thing we need to do with diamonds is to sort them. There are a whole slew of characteristics that influence how you can use a stone for simplicity sake I am going to lump them all together into a singular category. As a master artificer there are only four categories I use and that is category one through category four. Category one is reserved for diamonds that are only fit to be used in a wooden wand. Category two is reserved for diamonds that can be used in a steel wand. Category three is reserved for diamonds that can be used in ivory wands. Category four is reserved for diamonds that can be used in a gold wand. I am often fond of using category four gems (including diamonds) in all my artifice for reasons delineated in the introduction and detailed below.

Each wand also has a base ranking on the Flenken Power Scale and a certain number of castings that it can hold. If you are unfamiliar with this information I recommend you pick up a copy of "A Technical Treatise on Wands" - it covers this basic information. All gems can either modify this ranking, provide additional charges, do both, or provide other properties that make them useful. Diamonds are used to empower a spell, increasing the damage or enhancement of the spell by 50%.

Wooden Wands

Wooden wands have a base FPS ranking of 0.075 and provide five castings. Using a category one diamond in a wooden wand empowers the spell and slightly increases it's potency. Using a category two diamond in a wooden wand empowers the spell, provides an additional casting of the spell, and offers a slight increase in the potency of the spell. Using a category three diamond in a wooden wand will increase the FPS ranking to 0.1, empowers the spell, provides an additional two casting of the spell, and offers a modest increase in the potency of the wand. Using a category 4 diamond in a wooden wand will increase the FPS ranking to 0.1, empowers the spell, provides an additional three castings of the spell, and offers a noticeable increase in the potency of the wand.

Steel Wands

Steel Wands have a base FPS ranking of 0.15 and provide ten castings. Using a category two diamond in a steel wand empowers the spell, provides an additional casting of the spell, and offers a slight increase in the potency of the spell. Using a category three diamond in a steel wand will increase the FPS ranking to 0.175, empowers the spell, provides an additional two casting of the spell, and offers a slight increase in the potency of the wand. Using a category four diamond in a steel wand will increase the FPS ranking to 0.175, empowers the spell, provides an additional three casting of the spell, and offers a modest increase in the potency of the wand.

Ivory and Gold Wands

For the sake of brevity, I will cover both ivory Wands and gold wands simultaneously; ivory wands have a base FPS ranking of 0.225 and provide fifteen castings while gold wands have a base FPS ranking of 0.3 and provide twenty castings. A category three diamond in an ivory wand will increase the FPS ranking to 0.25, empowers the spell, provides an additional two casting of the spell, and offers a slight increase in the potency of the wand. A category four diamond in an ivory wand will increase the FPS ranking to 0.25, empowers the spell, provides an additional three casting of the spell, and offers a slight increase in the potency of the wand; a category four diamond in a gold wand will increase the FPS ranking to 0.325, empowers the spell, provides an additional three castings of the spell, and offers a slight increase in the potency of the wand.

This concludes my treatise on diamonds. As with my other books this book is just a primer. It will take you decades of research and experimentation to truly master the skill of artifice as I have. This treatise is merely a sample of the intricacies and wonders that the buffet of artifice offers. This treatise covers the use of Fire Opals in wand craft. The repetitious nature of these treatise have left me mentally drained and not as witty as I would like. Fire Opals function much like emeralds do in wand craft just not as well and thus they've been nicknamed among artificers as the poor mage's emeralds. While I prefer to work exclusively with emeralds sometimes an emerald isn't needed and I can't bring myself to use a sapphire so I turn to the humble fire opal; the poor mage's emerald.

Sorting

This treatise covers the use of Ink in scribing of scrolls. Most novice artificers first dip into the art of artifice starts with a quill, then a hasty scribbling towards wand craft. Those who linger with the tedium that is scroll scribing find an art that both has intricacies and rewards. By the end of this treatise dear reader you will understand those intricacies and will be on your way to a well deserved reward.

The First SIP

Before one can start talking about ink the ink needs to be poured out and measured for all ink is not created equal. In order to carefully classify this inequality Initiate Selia developed the Selia Ink Power Scale or SIPs for short. The three most common inks available in southern Negria have been rigorously tested and classified. Octopus Ink is one SIPs, Behir Ink is five SIPs, and finally the expensive and potent Phoenix Tears Ink is a staggering ten SIPs.

By Book or Blood

Now that we have ink classified there is one more slight oddity that must be addressed that stems from the inherently different nature of mages; specifically sorcerers and wizards. When a wizards scribers a first circle spell without specialized ink it has a base FPS rank of 0.025. Each spell circle increases that base FPS rank by 0.05 up to 0.425 for a spell of ninth circle. When a sorcerer scribes a first circle spell without specialized ink it has a base FPS rank of 0.05. Each spell circle increases that base FPS rank by 0.05 up to 0.45 for a spell of ninth circle. A slight difference but one that was repeatedly noticed during testing and bears mentioning. It also bears mentioning that it is totally not fair that sorcerer’s scrolls are a little bit stronger than wizard’s scrolls before adding ink. If you are unfamiliar with this information I recommend you pick up a copy of A Technical Treatise on Wands, it covers this basic information.

SIPPING Right Along

Moving from the peculiar differences between sorcerers and wizards it is now time to discuss the potency of ink with various spell circles. This part will be incredibly dense and rote repetition but pay special attention dear reader. For first circle spells each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.25. A total of FOUR SIPs is necessary to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. For a second circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.125. A total of EIGHT SIPs is necessary to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. For a third circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.0833. A total of ELEVEN SIPs is necessary to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. For a fourth circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.0625. A total of THIRTEEN SIPs is necessary for a sorcerer to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0 and FOURTEEN SIPs for a wizard to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. A fifth circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.05. A total of FIFTEEN SIPs is necessary for a sorcerer to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0 and SIXTEEN SIPs for a wizard to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. For a sixth circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.0416. A total of SEVENTEEN SIPs is necessary for a sorcerer to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0 and EIGHTEEN SIPs for a wizard to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. For a seventh circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.0357. A total of NINETEEN SIPs is necessary to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. For an eighth circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.03125. A total of TWENTY SIPs is necessary to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. For a ninth circle spell each SIPs will increase your FPS ranking by 0.0277. A total of TWENTY SIPs is necessary for a sorcerer to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0 and TWENTY ONE SIPs for a wizard to reach a FPS ranking of 1.0. A cautionary note, the Vortex is vast so there might be discrepancies with this tome and the results you expect.

Sneaky Merchants

When deciding how many SIPs you need for the desired FPS of your scroll, you can mix and match inks however you like to get the exact number of SIPs required. The merchants totally know how many SIPs each ink contains and their prices reflect this exactly. If you need 20 SIPs you won’t save anything for buying octopus ink in bulk! Go ahead and save yourself the extra ink application time by buying a couple of Phoenix Tear Inks. If you’re rich and your time is more valuable than your money and you need 18 SIPs you’ll probably want to buy two Phoenix Tear Inks. If, on the other hand, you’re, say, an extremely promising initiate stretching out your sponsor’s advance as much as you can, you should buy one Phoenix Tear Ink, one Behir Scale Ink, and three Octopus Inks instead.

Fire is the most common element capable of being artificed into a wand. But sometimes a ball of fire is neither ideal nor useful, in situations like these what do you do? You could attempt to use fire and earn the scorn and ridicule of your peers or if you are like me you could reach into your belt and draw forth your wand of thundering ball or a shocking ball or what not and be regarded as that well prepared mage; not as well prepared or as skilled in artifice as I am but any sort of preparation or skill is better than nothing. To be that well prepared mage you are going to need garnets.

The first thing we need to do with garnets is to sort them; the classification system I use to sort gems was mentioned in other books of this series but I feel it bears repeating. Jewelers have a whole slew of characteristics they will try to use to sell you a stone, as a mage one and only one characteristic matters and that is size. As a master artificer there are only four sizes I use and that is size 1 through size 4. Size 1 is reserved for gems that can be used in a wooden wand, Size 2 is reserved for gems that can be used in a steel wand, Size 3 is reserved for gems that can be used in ivory wands, and lastly Size 4 is reserved for gems that can be used in gold wands. Label them how ever you want, just remember there are four sizes that matter in artifice. It is also worth nothing that size 4 garnets are preferential.

Each wand has a base ranking on the Flenken Power Scale and a certain number of charges that it can hold. If you are unfamiliar with this information I recommend you pick up a copy of A Technical Treatise on Wands, it covers this basic information. All gems can either modify this ranking, provide additional charges, do both, or provide other properties that make them useful. The most basic property of garnets is their structure that allows for the substitution of elemental energy. You will still need a metamagic rod to provide the substitution.

Starting with wooden wands you will need at least a size 1 garnet. A size 1 garnet does allow for elemental energy substitution but does nothing else. This makes it less than ideal for artifice and if at all possible you should avoid using size 1 garnets. Size 2 garnets are modestly better; they provide a single additional charge and a modest boost to the potency of the wand, I would still recommend against their use unless you have to. A size 3 garnet is indistinguishable from a size 2 garnet, they might provide a modest boost to charges or potency when paired with other gems. A size 4 gem in a wooden wand will provide a modest boost to a wand's ranking on the Flenken Power Scale, 0.025 if you are curious, two additional charges to the wand, and a modest boost to the potency of the wand; in my opinion every artificer should use size 4 gems when they are able.

Moving on to steel wands you will need at least a size 2 garnet, using a size 1 garnet in a steel wand does absolutely nothing. Size 2 and Size 3 garnets when used in a steel wand provide a single additional charge to the wand; again I recommend against using them and going with a size 4 gem. A size 4 garnet in a steel wand will provide a modest boost to a wand's ranking on the Flenken Power Scale, 0.025, two additional charges to the wand, and a modest boost to the potency of the wand.

Next I will cover ivory wands, you will need at least a size 3 garnet when working with ivory wands, size 1 and size 2 garnets do absolutely nothing. Size 3 garnets when used in an ivory wand will provide an additional charge to the wand. A size 4 garnet in an ivory wand will provide a modest boost to a wand's ranking on the Flenken Power Scale, 0.025, and two additional charges to the wand; it will not boost the potency of the wand.

The humble alexandrite is often one of the first gems a mage will make extensive use of when they embark upon the lifetime journey of artifice. All to often though once a mage obtains mastery of the art they often discard the alexandrite for more potent and more useful gems. In an effort to speed that journey along I have penned this treatise on the humble alexandrite. While most of you reading this treatise will not obtain the mastery I have, you will find the knowledge contained with in it most helpful.

If you have not had a chance to pick up a copy of A Technical Treatise on Wands I highly recommend you do so as it will elucidate some of the terms I use when discussing alexandrites.

The first thing we need to do is sort alexandrites based on their unique characteristics. Jewelers have a whole slew of characteristics they will try to use to sell you a stone as a mage one and only one characteristic matters and that is size. As a master artificer there are only three sizes I use and that is 1 through 4. Size 1 is reserved for gems that can be used in a wooden wand, Size 2 is reserved for gems that can be used in a steel wand, Size 3 is reserved for gems that can be used in ivory wands, and lastly Size 4 is predictably reserved for gems that can be used in gold wands. Label them how ever you want, just remember there are four sizes that matter in artifice.

Wands as you know have a base number of charges that they can contain. An alexandrite of the appropriate size increases that base number of charges by 50%. But an observant mage will notice that in wooden wands larger alexandrites have a multiplier effect. A size 2 alexandrite in a wooden wand will double the number of charges a wand can contain, a size 3 alexandrite will increase it by 250% and a size 4 alexandrite will triple the number of charges a wand can contain and raise the wands base FPS ranking by 0.025. Steel wands obtain diminished returns on oversized alexandrites, a size 3 gem will only increase the base number of charges by 75% and a size 4 gem will only double them, but still raises the wands base FPS ranking by 0.025. Ivory wands have it even worse; a size 4 gem in an ivory wand will still provide the raise to the wands base FPS ranking boosting it by 0.025 but only provides a sliver of additional charges giving an increase of a mere 60%. A size 4 gem in gold wands will provided the expected increase to the base number of charges by 50% and unexpectedly provides the boost to the wands base FPS ranking giving it the coveted 0.025.

A mage can use undersized alexandrites in a wand we have a word for that, it is called stupid. I have conducted a few tests to confirm it is foolish. If you feel like continuing in my folly please feel free and let me know what the results are; mostly so I can gloat and say I told you so. Being the youngest of 7 kids I relish the chance to be able to gloat.

The Red Order of the Flame is the reincarnation of the Yellow Order of the Old Fold of Nine. Since its founding, the Red Order has held closely to the core philosophies of [[Andrinor|Andrinor]], God of Mortal Magic, including absolute freedom in practice of the Art. Over time, it has increased its relationship with the Church of Andrinor, developing a generation of theurges (practitioners of both Divine and Arcane magics) dedicated to spreading the Will and Art of the Arcane Lord. The Red Order also believes in using magic to help normal people live day to day and seeks to help these same people learn to not fear and even accept magic and to help develop the arcane talents of those that wish it. It has also become a leading body of research into wild magic. Though it is the smallest of the Mage Orders, the Reds claim a greater percentage of Andrinorans than any other order.

To become an Initiate of the Red Order of the Flame, one need only have the sponsorship of the Order. Sponsorship comes either from acknowledgment by an officer, or being apprenticed to a Red Mage in good standing. Initiates are expected to be enrolled in the Academy of Arcane Magic. Seeking out tutoring by an experienced Red Mage is highly recommended, though not required. To become a mage fully vested the Red Order of the Flame, one must bear the Mark of Andrinor's Trust, acquired after graduating from the Academy. Mages bearing the Mark of Andrinor's Trust need not go through the Initiate process to join the Red Order.

Though many among the Red Order are faithful of Andrinor, one does -not- need to worship Andrinor to join.

If you were like me the fist sight you had of this city was from the deck of a lumbering sea cow beating sail for the docks. If you are new to the city your first order of business after sliding down the gangway is to give thanks to [[Ingoren]] for your safe travels; I didn't once and the ship sank, but that tale can be found in my extensive and yet unpublished memoirs. After praising [[Ingoren]] turn your attention to the eastern end of the dock and stand there mouth a gape at the splendor of [[Red_Order_of_the_Flame|The Red Order Tower]]. The beautiful and imposing structure thrusts skyward, a bastion of arcane study among the mundane hustle and bustle of the dock.
