Base language
The elves of Avlis were created by a god named Dru'El. In his mortal life, he was a human who got instructions from the elven god Corellon Larethian on how to make elves when he became a god.

Dru'El was fascinated by the spirit population that used to inhabit Avlis before the time of the gods. Unfortunately, most (almost all) of them were wiped out in the battle between the nine gods and the evil Negerai invader god which nearly destroyed Avlis in the beginning. The population of spirits was low to begin with because even before the major deities ascended to godhood, the Negerai had gated in hoards of Tanar'ri which began to EAT the spirits.

Still, Dru'El wanted the language of his elven people to be the same language that was once spoken by the benevolent nature spirits that inhabited the world. He made due with whatever fragments could be found and filled in the rest himself. Thus, the elven language on Avlis today is a derivative of the spirit language and therefore differs greatly from elven languages on other worlds such as Krynn or Toril or Middle Earth.

The word the spirits used to describe themselves as a whole was "Nanshae" (pronounced: non-SHAY). Later over time, the elves adopted this word to describe the elven species as a whole, but it was spelled Nanshi and pronounced "NON-shee". However, the elves in the Northern part of the country still use the old pronunciation of "non-SHAY".

Apostrope's in the Avlissian elven language are often used to denote the word "of", much like slang English will use o', as in "pile o' stuff". Except in elven it's proper usage. The Avlissian elven word for land is Tana (TA-na) and the early elven name for their nation was Tan' Nanshi, later shortened to T'Nanshi, or "Land of the Elves".

Interesting note about Drangonari Elves:
The drangonari elves were a creation by the god Angadar. When he ascended to godhood, he immediately got the lofty idea to create a race of his own, and taking the form of one of his enemies, an avariel (winged) elf, Angadar corrupted the form into the drangonari. They are almost identical to the avariel in stature and build, and they even once had leathery wings in place of the angelic wings of the avariel. Also in place of soft white skin they have dark green scales much like a lizard, and they always have black hair.

Through an unknown and disasterous series of events, 99.99% of all drangonari lost their wings, and the ones born today do not have them at all. Few remaining ones do, and they are considered to be direct descendants of Angadar himself, whom the drangonari all revere, even if they don't openly worship him.

Angadar was once a mortal elf born on Toril, which is the planet of the Forgotten Realms setting. The elven language which HE speaks IS the Forgotten Realms elven language, and that is the language which he taught to his creations.

So on Avlis, the old elven language that is seen in so many other campaign worlds is actually the spoken language of the drangonari! So, you may want to watch what language you speak in front of the Avlissian high elves!
Update from From: Orleron - Not sure I ever divulged this rule before, but Hebrew definitely does that when you want to abbreviate "of the". Use an "ai" ending instead of stacking the prefixes B'Le. For example: Mespahai tzadahlit = Family of the Hunt
When counting, you should go from the largest to smallest number, using v' (and) for hooking on the last numeral placement.<br />
When a number is > 1 of a large number (hundreds, thousands, millions), the multiple is plural (rishen, esrishen, goodesrishen) on that large number's nanshilae word.<br />
If something is 11,000-19,000 it will be expressed as esra v'hod esrishen - esra v'taysh esrishen for the thousands place.
In the case of 100,000, the "hundred" in the thousands place will always be single (rish) even when it is more than 1<br/> (see the 200,000 example below)<br />

Example:
:* 11... esra v'hod
:* 37... lasha v'sheev
:* 100... rish
:* 104... rish v'bah
:* 200... shta rishen (two hundreds)
:* 350... loash rishen v'mishya
:* 225... shta rishen shny v'maysh (two hundreds twenty and five)
:* 2,000... shta esrishen (two thousands)
:* 2,148... shta esrishen rish arba v'shmoe (two thousands, one hundred forty and eight)
:* 4,321... bah eshrishen loash rishen shny v'hod (four thousands, three hundreds twenty and one)
:* 12,345... esra v'shta esrishen loash rishen arba v'maysh (10 and 2 thousands, three hundreds, forty and five)
:* 200,000... shta rish esrishen (two hundred thousands)
:* 12,345,678... figure it out yourself!

To use the number to denote placement (first, second, third), you would add leh to the end of the number.

:* First: hod + leh = hodleh
:* Second: shta + leh = shtaleh
:* Third: loash + leh = loashleh
:* Fourth: bah + leh = bahleh
:* Fifth: maysh + leh = mayshleh
:* Sixth: shaysh + leh = shayshleh
:* 20th: shny + leh = shnyleh
:* 104th: rish v'bahleh (100 and fourth)
:* millionth: goodesrishleh

If the word ends in a consonant, add "-en". If the word ends in a vowel, add "n".

Present Indicative tense
Singular verbs, remove the as ending and use the stem by itself:

:* I guard 'Eni shemar

:* You guard Ta shemar

:* He/She/It guards Loo/Lah/Loo shemar.

Plural verbs, add -u to the stem:

:* We guard Nethnu shemaru

:* You guard Tem shemaru

:* They guard Loom shemaru

Present Perfect tense:
In the present perfect tense, it is not necessary to use the pronoun. Thus, I guarded, "Eni shemarti", can be "shemarti". Accent is on the second syllable in this tense.

:* I guarded shemarti

:* You guarded shemarta

:* He guarded shemaroe

:* She guarded shemarah

:* We guarded shemarnu

:* You guarded shemartem

:* They guarded shemaroo

Future imperfect:
:* I will guard Eni e'shemar

:* You will guard Ta tee'shemar

:* He/She/It will guard loo/lah/loo ye'shemar

:* We will guard Nethnu ne'shemar

:* You (pl) will guard Tem tee'shemaru

:* They will guard Loom ye'shemaru

Converting a verb to a noun:
Take the stem and add the 'ith' ending. <small>(Some verbs like Sheras (to sing) do not follow this rule.)</small>

Examples:
:* taynas (to give) becomes taynith (giving)
:* tikvooas (to hope) becomes tikvooith (hope, or hoping)

There is no distinction in elven between the gerund (-ing ending) form of a verb turned into a noun and its non gerund form. Thus, hope and hoping are both tikvooith, and you must know the context of the sentence to figure out which is which.

If the noun is a person, add 'ot' to the end of the noun (or 'ithot' to the end of the verb stem). Remember plurals come after the entire word (ithoten not ithenot).

Examples:
:* taynas (to give) becomes taynithot (giver)
:* raytzas (to run) becomes raytzithot (runner)

The verb "to be".
The only irregular verb in the Avlissian elven tongue is the verb "to be" (hayas). In elven, the verb "to be" is implied in the present tense.

:* I am good. Eni toova.

:* You are good. Ta toova.

:* He is good. Loo toova.
Showing possession:
The elven language does not use the verb to have in the same way as most other languages. Instead of saying "I have", they are literally saying "There is to me".

You can make statements of possesion by adding the proper personal ending to the root "Yayn'", as below:

:* I have (literally: There is to me): Yayn'ni

:* You have (There is to you): Yayn'ta

:* He/It has (There is to him/it): Yayn'loe

:* She has (There is to her): Yayn'loah

:* We have (There is to us): Yayn'lenu

:* You have (pl) (There is to you): Yayn'tem

:* They have (There is to them): Yayn'loom

To make these negative, add the word no, "Li" in front of them.

:* I don't have Li Yayn'ni

:* You don't have Li Yayn'ta

:* He/it doesn't have Li Yayn'loe

:* She doesn't have Li Yayn'loah

:* We don't have Li Yayn'lenu

:* You don't have (pl) Li Yayn'tem

:* They don't have Li Yayn'loom

Misc Notes
:* The accent is always on the first sylable unless otherwise noted.
:* Adjectives come after the nouns: friendly stranger gartha havera
:* The preposition "from" is M', and it is used in much the same was as the word "the", Le'.
We have blocked the default keys to prevent issues.
GOG will supply their customers with a unique set of keys suitable for multiplayer use. Please visit this page to request new keys: http://www.gog.com/en/support/neverwinter_nights_diamond_edition/online_play_in_neverwinter_nights_diamond.
Your servers keep telling me "Your player name has been refused by the server"

On June 28, 2011 Bioware's Master Server was taken offline and has not been restored or replaced. The Master Server provided authentication services for NWN multiplayer servers. Some form of MSID authentication is necessary to prevent account hijacking.

What is the Alpha Server?

Alpha is a replacement Master Server that authenticates NWN multiplayer logins to select NWN servers. It does not decrypt Premium modules and never will. Since we do not have access to the Master Server database, we need to collect authentication information from you before you can play.

If you had played on Avlis between June 19th and June 29th, I have an authentication session on file and all you need to do is to register with the web page. All other requests need to send a PM to the Alpha Administrators for assistance.

Who are the Alpha Admins?

PlasmaJohn, TripleAught, refminion, maxinion

I've never logged into Avlis before what do I need to do?

New players may use any ID they wish that does not match one that we have on file. If and when the Master Server returns, you will need to reauthenticate that ID against the Master Server. If you cannot satisfy the Master Server you will not get access to the characters created under that ID until you can.

Safe Harbor Exception: If the id created is prefixed with 'avlis_' we will make sure that you have access to your characters one way or the other.

If you choose not to use an 'avlis_' prefixed MSID, please let me know that you have read and understood this section in your PM.

I've logged into Avlis before what do I need to do?

If you want in you need to register your NWN multiplayer login and password with a web form. We don't ask for this lightly and we understand that's going to be uncool with people, so there will be other options in the future. If this doesn't scare you off read on.

If you had logged in between June 19th and June 29th of 2011 you only need to visit visit https://world.avlis.org:20443/alpha/ to register your multiplayer password. Please check there first. If it rejects you then you must get help from an Admin.

Please clearly state what your MSID is when sending in requests even if it matches your board id. Making the Administrators guess who you are will lead to significant delays in handling your request. Please do not send your multiplayer password or cdkeys. We will not ever ask you to PM those.

We are not blindly handing out registrations. Before they're approved, the Administrator has to verify that you have rights to that MSID. The best way for us to do this is if the board account you are PM'ing from has posted as at least one of the characters linked to the MSID prior to June 29, 2011. If you already have a verifiable established account that this MSID is an alt for we can try to match your cdkeys, but you will need to send your request from the primary.

My browser is complaining about your certificate.

The certificate is for avlis.blackdagger.net and needs to be regenerated for world.avlis.org. The SHA Fingerprint is:

<tt>SHA1 Fingerprint=F4:C4:85:03:00:2A:E0:D2:3B:08:D9:0E:16:56:41:58:EE:6D:A1:09</tt>

The registration form keeps rejecting my login and password

If you have Remember Password ticked in your client, look in your nwnplayer.ini file for a line that says Password=yourpassword and make sure that what you're typing into the form matches that. If you're still having trouble please send your multiplayer ID (only, no passwords) to our Alpha administrators (see above).

Is this secure?

The password is transformed by a one-way function. This means there is no function to take the result and produce your password. This is not perfect, it only makes it harder to break. Before I save the result, it is encrypted using a two-key system. The website only has the encryption key and cannot decrypt the data.

While I have taken pains to harden the servers I will not and cannot claim they are perfectly secure. Anybody who does make such a claim is lying, stupid or both.

Who else is using Alpha?
How I Started on Avlis
I have always been a fan of RPGs, since the Ultima and Wizardry days. A good friend of mine, sozin, got me hooked up with Avlis after I bashed a few of the single player mods. My first PC was a boring dwarven fighter named Gru El Wanderito (I cheesed the name from Groo the Wanderer. Sorry.) After realizing he was a major sux0r, I started Siri Van Brockenhamm, a LG turned LE monk. Fun to play. She was part of the Order of the Dragon, as its headmistress, and now part of the Church of The'ton. After a few months, I pulled some more nerds into Avlis. Xarthna (Tasi), Silverfields (Benedict), and GreenElf (Valad) became addicted.

I have been a DM for 2 years. I love pwning J00. I have run plots for Children of the Dreadlord, Iskarim, and Academy of Bardic Arts. I don't have much time to play lately, but I enjoy DMing. I have also been to 6 meets, and know most of you are crazy motherfuckers. I like.

Offline
Asides from playing vids, I do improv comedy at a few places in Chicago. I work at an electronic options trading company named PEAK6 doing some programming and tool work. I also skydive at Sky Knights.
About Me:
I have been on Avlis since Oct 2002 when my friends Ashlynn & Reinstag told me about it during several of our PnP sessions.
I joined the team after a month or so as a builder and I built several rows of the Wilderness server as well as a keep and some dungeon type areas.<br>
While I was working on some bugged transitions I sorta talked my way into fixing all of the transitions problems on the Wilderness and that then spilled over to other duties such as importing updates, restarting the servers as needed, doing restores, and general bug hunting. I then sorta picked up doing that on all of the servers, at the time we had Mikona, Wilderness, Le'Or and Elysia, and also started preforming a few Admin duties. <br>
At the same time I was doing this I started DMing and was the original Kelvos. <br>
In 2004 I became embroiled in real life to the point that I needed to step back some and I started turning over my duties to others who stepped up to become MC's and my Avlis time greatly decreased. Later that year I returned to some do some DMing but again I was forced by Real Life to back off as my wife and I had our home built on our ranch and I was without Internet for about 4 months. <br>
Currently I am active in the forums, and handle a good bit of the Admin work related to dealing with problem players as this is something that I can do over a dial up connection. I do hope to someday return to actively DMing, dusting off my Half-Elven bandits and have some fun.<br>
UPDATE: 2007
I am currently the Lead Producer and have been getting a little more active since I got a Broad Band connection. I have even logged in to play a little. :)

I have been on Avlis since October of 2005 and a member of the team since Jan. of 2006. I played PnP off and on for the better part of 12 years, DM'ing for 8 of those. I have served in the US Army, 82nd Airborne and received 2 Degrees. An Associates in Culinary Arts/Food Production and soon to have my Bachelors in Technology Management. Between work, school, and Avlis I have very little free time, but when some does roll around I am usually outside getting some fresh air.

PlasmaJohn: /* Donate */

Some people who play Avlis for many months start to realize that this gameworld is the product not only of the excellent players who populate it with interesting characters but also the product of a dedicated staff who volunteer their time, expertise and creative energy. Those people become so invested in the Avlis community that they themselves start to wonder what they can do to make Avlis better. There are four simple ways one can give back to Avlis:
__NOTOC__
Donate
There is no monthly fee for players to play on Avlis. But it does cost money for Avlis to operate – machine costs, internet access, electricity, etc. If you have a paypal account, you can donate money directly to Avlis. You can also give back to Avlis by buying merchandise from Amazon.com via the link from the Avlis webpage. Avlis merchandise, from T-shirts to mousepads to coffee mugs, is available at Café Press. The finances of the Avlis project in its NeverwinterNights incarnation are managed by FOIG, Inc. and published on the Avlis forums.

Spread the Word
Avlis is constantly expanding. As of this writing there are nine servers, all in various stages of development. The Avlis environment is life-like in that it is subject to change - at any time more content may be in process of being added to the servers, whereas existing content may undergo further development. As of this writing there are approximately a few hundred active players, but Avlis has room for many more. If you know someone who you think might be interested in playing Avlis, tell them about it. Also, vote for Avlis in polls about persistent worlds (PWs) on websites such as the Neverwinter Vault.

Guarantee for Quality Assurance
Avlis maintains a Quality Assurance (QA) group, for the purpose of keeping Avlis up to expectations. While all players can use the Bug Tracker to signal for problems with existing In Game content, those of you who wish to prevent glitches before a project is implemented In Game are welcome to apply to the Quality Assurance group. (See: QA)

Join the Creation Control Centre
Are you an excellent programmer? Do you know how to write scripts for NWN? Are you proficient with the NWN toolset? Can you build interesting and engaging areas in the toolset? If so, then you may want to apply to for the Avlis Creation Control Centre (CCC) division, as an Avlis area builder, system or quest designer. (See: CCC)

Become a Team Member
Do you like playing a variety of roles? Is one character just not enough for you? Or do you like creating adventures and quests and having players play them out? Do you have experience as a PnP DM? Then you may have what it takes to become an Avlis DM. If you are interested in devoting a large portion of your time to Avlis is this way, then contact The Avlis Team for an application (email [mailto:staff@avlis.org staff@avlis.org]).

Please be aware that when you purchase NWN from GOG.com that it comes with a set of default keys. Even though the MasterServer is no longer operational, the NWN server software requires that all players connecting to it must have a unique set of keys.
GOG will supply their customers with a unique set of keys suitable for multiplayer use. Please visit this page to request new keys: link.

What is the Alpha Server?

Alpha is a replacement Master Server that authenticates NWN multiplayer logins to select NWN servers. It does not decrypt Premium modules and never will.

Please send a PM to PlasmaJohn.

I've logged into Avlis before what do I need to do?

If you want in you need you to register your NWN multiplayer login and password with a web form. We don't ask for this lightly and we understand that's going to be uncool with people, so there will be other options in the future. If this doesn't scare you off please visit https://world.avlis.org:20443/alpha/

If you're still having trouble please send your multiplayer ID to our Alpha administrators (see below).

Alpha Administrators (please send your request to all of them):

PlasmaJohn, maxinion, Eklektikos, TripleAught

Is this secure?

The password is transformed by a one-way function. This means there is no known function to take the result and produce your password.

So far this Avlis only. It will be offered to the other CoPaP servers as soon as some administrative details are worked out.
