II. Autumn

Two lovers lay in Summer's golden fields,
She on her back, her hair about her strewn,
The sun above, his kissing lips a shield,
And whiled away the longest afternoons.

But though her smile rivaled the stars for grace,
Not even stars can hold the darkness bay,
Or fix a wand'ring lover's heart in place.
And as the nights grew long he slipped away.

Bored eyes, locked rooms, brusque words, an absent kiss--
Till more and more she felt herself alone--
Till one night fearing something gone amiss,
She searched his room. She found a finger bone.

With trembling hand she knelt beside his bed,
Reached out, and grasped. A disembodied arm:
Its skin was cold and white; the veins were bled
Dust dry, the wrist inscribed with runic charms.

As tears ran hot down Rachael's face, she swore
His hands would never touch her flesh again,
And yet, she did not move toward the door--
For some, love is a stricter bond than chain.
