A Metamagic Rod can be used on Avlis to apply metamagic effects to a spell. They can be used without the player character having taken any metamagic feats and will also allow the player character to apply metamagic effects to spells which would normally be too high level to permit the use of that type of metamagic.
Augment Summoning Rod
Creatures conjured using the Summon Creature I-IX range of spells gain +1 hit points per Hit Die and a +1 competence modifier on attacks and damage rolls. Creatures conjured using other spells are not affected by Augment Summoning.
Elemental Substitution Rod
Substitutes the elemental damage dealt by a spell for a different element determined by the choice of rod. Elemental Substitution will only affect spells that deal acid, cold, electric, fire, or sonic damage. If a spell deals multiple types of damage, Elemental Substitution may not affect all the damage dealt by that spell. Elemental Substitution will stack with all other metamagic effects; but only one Elemental Substitution effect can be applied to a spell at any given time. Elemental Substitution rods are available in the following elements:
- Acid
- Cold
- Electric
- Fire
- Sonic
Empower Spell Rod
Increases the damage of spells in the same way as the Empower Spell feat. When applied using a metamagic rod, Empower Spell will stack with all other metamagic effects and can be used to empower even 8th level, 9th level, and epic spells. But it will only affect those spells whose descriptions on this wiki indicate that they may be empowered, and its effects will not stack with those of the Empower Spell feat.
Extend Spell Rod
Doubles the duration of spells in the same way as the Extend Spell feat. When applied using a metamagic rod, Extend Spell will stack with all other metamagic effects and can be used to extend even 9th level, and epic spells. But it will only affect those spells whose descriptions on this wiki indicate that they may be empowered.
Maximize Spell Rod
Increases the damage of spells in the same way as the Maximize Spell feat. When applied using a metamagic rod, Maximize Spell will stack with all other metamagic effects and can be used to maximize even 7th level, 8th level, 9th level, and epic spells. But it will only affect those spells whose descriptions on this wiki indicate that they may be maximized.
Other Metamagic Effects
The Quicken Spell, Silent Spell, and Still Spell effects are not available as metamagic rods. Player characters may only access these effects by taking the relevant feats.
