Lullaby in a Minor Key
The Harpinger's servant, on the last day,
Took up her harp and played her last refrain,
And sang a simple song, of the end of the world,
To the deaf children in her lullaby voice.
And nobody heard when the sky fell down,
And the waters lept into sheets of flame,
For the death that closed in around them,
Sang with the voices of those that they loved.
And even when they knew their doom,
They stood to applaud and to welcome it in,
For the demons sang their sing-song dirges,
And the world went,
At the last,
Smiling,
Into Silence.
