Research

Creature Name: Coyote

Observations by: Malulani jael MacMurray

Creature Type: Animal

Creature Subtype: Canine

CTS trainable: Not yet (researching).

Introduction

Smaller then it's wild kin, the wolves and dire wolves, coyote is more closely the size of the average farm dog. Fur colors range from light grey to red and often have an mix of black and white hairs. Vocalizations are usually a howl by solitary animals. They are often the prey of people, large cats and larger wolves. They make a lot of different sounds like barks, huffs, growls, yelps and howls.

Feeding Habits

The coyote primarily is a meat eater. It can bring down a deer. It also will hunt rodents, frogs, snakes, fish, birds and bugs. I've also seen coyotes eating fruit and vegetables when nothing else is at hand.

Disposition and Social Habits

Like the Dire Wolf, it tends to be more often solitary, tending to form loose groups only when the hunting is good in a particular area. Both parents will raise the kits in dens until the kits can follow along to learn to hunt.

Habitat

I have observed one in Geritrie Forest, but I think that coyotes are versatile enough and clever enough to live anywhere they want to, including near the dwellings of people.

Fylgia

Most compatible: Dire Wolf

  • Much like the dire wolf, the coyote is an independent canine that spends most of it's time as a solitary creature unless mating or raising kits.

Other notes

Most of the nomads that I have conversed with in the past see coyote conducting the spirit of the trickster. Coyote is often a symbol of cleverness and cunning but also playfulness and resourcefulness. Coyote teaches us to adapt to our current environment.
