Rain Merstin is a halfling Druid of Skern. Her hair is silky black, which she usually keeps in a long ponytail. She has tanned skin and big brown eyes. Standing at 3′4″, she's short even for a halfling. Rain is slender and nimble. Her palms and knees are thickly calloused. Those with sharp eyes might notice her unusually pointy teeth when she grins.
Rain's ability to read and write is very limited. She has been learning from her friends lately and has made some progress. She also constantly mispronounces “pelail”. So far no one has corrected her yet...
The wolf girl of Blandenberg
((Team-approved backstory))
On a summer evening in the year 2225, two rangers brought a halfling girl to the Blandenberg Orphanage. They had found her playing with some dire wolf cubs in the woods, as if she was one of them. When they tried to approach the girl, a giant she-wolf attacked them fiercely. The rangers had to kill the she-wolf to capture the girl.
The girl, about 9 years of age, was as wild as a dire wolf. She tore off any clothes put on her, would only eat raw meat, and howled at night. The orphanage staff did everything they could to rehabilitate her. After two months their efforts paid off. The girl started to give up her wolf ways and socialize with the other children.
They named her Kaya. Kaya picked up the common tongue with surprising speed, a sign that she used to speak the language. She also knew a few halfling nursery rhymes—with lyrics altered to druidic prayers. However, she would not say anything about her past.
Three years later, just as everyone thought she was going to be a normal child, Kaya successfully escaped from the orphanage. A search party was sent out but found no trace of her.
Kaya was never sighted in Blandenberg again.
The wildling of Skern
~Six years later~
The peaceful nation of Ferrell greeted a daughter she had not known: a halfling girl with a dire wolf padding by her side. She was clad in a ragged leather armor, while her sickle was kept sharp as new. She spoke common, but her speech was often baby talk mixed with hand gestures. One of the few things comprehensible from her words was that her name was Rain, and the dire wolf named Shera was her “sister”.
For a long time, Rain stayed in the woods, as typical druids do. She noticed that the commoners were afraid of her dire wolf, even though she was just as afraid of them. After discovering the grove on top of Kitanya Hill, Rain became a frequent visitor there. It was one of the most beautiful and tranquil places she had ever seen. And maybe for the first time in her life, she met a group of people she could relate to. Soon, Rain was converted to the faith of Skern in the Temple of Balance.
It was another month or so before Rain overcame her fear and entered the city. Before long she realized that no one here was going to do her harm, and that city-dwellers could be friendly too. So, Rain went from a wildling to just another busy Hin in Port Eridanus. She even rented a room in the Port Hole Inn. Later she would meet her neighbors, Tessa Tangletoe and Lute, who eventually became two of her best friends.
The watcher of the forest
Although accepted by Skern, Rain was still unfamiliar with his ways. The Priest of Balance and the druids in Kitanya's Grove all had their duties. Rain did not want to disturb them too much. So she left a message on the bulletin board, hoping someone who also follows Skern would see it and find her.
The response came from a ranger named Belina Greenberry, who introduced Rain to the wise druid, Emrys Y'Coeden. Together, they instructed Rain in Skern's philosophies.
Rain never forgave the two rangers who killed her wolf mother, and therefore did not warm up to Belina at first. As she grew in wisdom, Rain came to realize that she had been foolish. It was not fair to blame all rangers for the doings of two. Besides, if not for those two rangers, she would still be living like a dire wolf.
From Belina and Emrys, Rain learned of the existence of Shemathen'Le'Yeritath, or Watchers of the Forest in the common tongue. Living and fighting with people who also care about nature's well-being was everything she had dreamed of. After participating in several Shemathen meetings, Rain became a formal member and began her watch.
