Knowledge Skill Specialization System
The Knowledge Skill Specialization System is a skill specialization that utilizes the Lore skill. The fields are based off of the 3.5e edition of Knowledge skill. Knowledge actually encompasses a number of unrelated skills. Knowledge represents a study of some body of lore, possibly an academic or even scientific discipline.
Each character will get one free specialization from their base class, as well as being able to select one field. When choosing a specialization you will receive a bonus to rolls in that field, while receiving an equivalent reduction to rolls in fields your character does not specialize in. Characters level 1-20 receive a smaller modifier, while characters level 21+ receive the full modifier.
Wizard and Bard classes receive additional perks as scholars well in this system.
Available Fields of Knowledge:
Arcana & Planes (planar lore, ancient mysteries, magic traditions, arcane symbols, cryptic phrases, constructs, dragons, magical beasts) Architecture & Engineering (buildings, aqueducts, bridges, fortifications) Dungeoneering (aberrations, caverns, oozes, spelunking) Geography (lands, terrain, climate, people) History (historical royalty, wars, colonies, migrations, founding of cities) Local (legends, personalities, inhabitants, laws, customs, traditions, humanoids) Nature (animals, fey, giants, monstrous humanoids, plants, seasons and cycles, weather, vermin) Nobility & Royalty (lineages, heraldry, family trees, mottoes, personalities) Religion (gods and goddesses, mythic history, ecclesiastic tradition, holy symbols, undead)
There are some extra ways to increase your bonuses to Knowledge checks in the game too from other existing systems such as Bartending and Jali's Book Quest
The free knowledge fields for the first level classes are: Barbarian, Druid, and Ranger classes will receive Nature; Cleric and Paladin classes will receive Religion, the Fighter class will receive Dungeoneering, the Monk class will receive History, the Rogue class will receive Local; and Sorcerer, Wizard, and Psion will receive Arcana. All other first level classes will receive Dungeoneering.
