Systems and Tools

Knowledge Skill Specialization System

The Knowledge Skill Specialization System is a skill specialization that utilizes the Lore skill. The fields are based off of the 3.5e edition of Knowledge skill. In Avlis, instead of being a "hard" skill (selected at level up individually investing skill points to advance) it is a "soft" skill, as mentioned, based on Lore. Knowledge actually encompasses a number of unrelated skills. Knowledge represents a study of some body of lore, possibly an academic or even scientific discipline.

Each character will get one free specialization from their base class, as well as being able to select one field. When choosing a specialization you will receive a bonus to rolls in that field, while receiving an equivalent reduction to rolls in fields your character does not specialize in. Characters level 1-20 receive a smaller modifier, while characters level 21+ receive the full modifier.

Wizard and Bard classes receive additional perks as scholars in this system.

Available Fields of Knowledge:

Arcana & Planes (planar lore, ancient mysteries, magic traditions, arcane symbols, cryptic phrases, constructs, dragons, magical beasts)
Architecture & Engineering (buildings, aqueducts, bridges, fortifications)
Dungeoneering (adventuring, aberrations, caverns, oozes, spelunking)
   Geography (lands, terrain, climate, people)
History (historical royalty, wars, colonies, migrations, founding of cities)
Local (legends, personalities, inhabitants, laws, customs, traditions, humanoids)
   Nature -
Standard (animals, fey, giants, monstrous humanoids, plants, seasons and cycles, weather, vermin)
Subterranean Variant (fungi, underground rivers, subterranean fauna, delving, myconids)
Nobility & Royalty (lineages, heraldry, family trees, mottoes, personalities)
Religion (gods and goddesses, mythic history, ecclesiastic tradition, holy symbols, undead)

There are some extra ways to increase your bonuses to Knowledge checks in the game too from other existing systems such as Bartending and Jali's Book Quest

The free knowledge fields for the first level classes are: Barbarian, Druid, and Ranger classes will receive Nature; Cleric and Paladin classes will receive Religion, the Bard and Fighter class will receive Dungeoneering, the Monk class will receive History, the Rogue class will receive Local; and Sorcerer, Wizard, and Psion will receive Arcana. All other first level classes will receive Dungeoneering.

When making a Knowledge check for Arcana, whichever is higher between the spellcraft skill and the Lore skill will be used.

Available Commands

Available commands are /knowledge <help/spec/respec/stat/list/roll>

Standard Commands

  • /knowledge help - Gives you additional information while in game
  • /knowledge stat - Displays what fields your character specializes in
  • /knowledge list - Shows the details above about the fields and what areas of information they cover
  • /knowledge roll <field> - The core function, how you roll!

One-Time Use Commands

  • /knowledge spec <field> - How you choose a field to specialize in when starting
  • /knowledge respec - A One-time-only reroll on your chosen field of knowledge from your original selection

How to start using the Knowledge System

You can get this information in game as well, but including it here on the wiki as well for convenience.

  1. /knowledge spec <field> - this is how you choose a specialization.

Available fields are: Engineering & Architecture, Dungeoneering, Geography, History, Local, Nature, Nobility & Royalty, Religion, and Arcana & Planes.

e.g., /knowledge spec dun will select the Dungeoneering field to specialize in.

How to Roll using the Knowledge System

/knowledge roll <field> - this is how you roll a knowledge check.

You can use the first word or the first three letters of the field.

e.g., /knowledge roll history or /knowledge roll his will both perform a roll for the knowledge field of History.

Tip: You can bind these commands to your quickslots for convenient rolling.

You can also ping the DM Channel using the Chat Menu first with your question and knowledge check to get more information.

OOC Notes from the Dev

For initial implementation, this only exists in the ACP system. It is not yet implemented in the Emote Radial Menu for dice rolls and skill checks, nor can DMs prompt an automatic roll yet. There are no synergy bonuses at this time either.

We welcome feedback on the system and want to make it fun to use, have an option for your character to standout, and add some cool flavor and diversity. Please feel free to make a PIB post with suggestions and feedback! Thank you.
