The Great War

The Great War began nearly 2200 years ago. It was the worst confrontation Avlis had ever seen, and still ranks as the most deadly.

The Fairy War ended because of the events that started the Great War. Warring factions of fairies made by Titania and O'Ma were engaged in a bloody struggle for dominance when the orcs made a surprise attack.

The orcs wanted to capitalize on the battle and wipe out both races, which in their minds was a good deed for the whole world. However, none but the orcs agreed on this point, and the fairies immediately ceased their hostilities. They vowed that the Fairy War would only begin again once evil was eradicated on Avlis.

Instead of killing each other, the fairies joined forces. They in turn were joined by the elves and the dwarves. The humans, dracon, and changelings were neutral in the battle though they helped out where they could. Some offered mild military support while others participated wholeheartedly as individuals.

The orcs were not joined by their fellow evil creations, the lizard men, however the giant kin did help them quite a bit.

The Great War was devastating for the orcs. They could not withstand the combined might of the goodly races, and their whole entire nation was chased across the continent. Somewhere in the middle it split into two and was just about to be driven into the sea (for the nixies to finish them) when Mikon intervened.

He had witness the importation of good dragons to help against the orcs and he did not think this was a balanced idea. So, Mikon created evil dragons from the stones on Avlis: granite, amber, coal, limestone, and more. These dragons immediately brought the battle to a standstill.

This deadlock gave the orcs time to found the two nations of Brekon and Dubunat, and it also gave their mages time to work on a secret plan. The mages researched a powerful evocation ritual which was designed to wipe out large amounts of enemies and win the war. However, on the first use of the spell, something went totally wrong. It is rumored that the activation of a powerful artifact disrupted the magical spell and caused it to backfire.

The backfire wiped out all of the orcish mages, and tens of thousands of beings from all the other races, including humans. From this point on, magic was made illegal in all orcish lands, and the fighting was brought to a halt.

The good and evil dragons agreed to keep each other at bay, and all fighting ceased because everyone was too damaged to continue.
