Introduction
Eagles are the largest of the birds of prey, bigger than hawks and falcons, and are known as the "King of Birds." Known for their size, strength, speed, and keen eyesight, they are often used as symbols in heraldry. Due to their majestic appearance they are the namesake of the Eagle's Splendor spell.
Feeding Habits
Eagles have muscular legs and sharp talons, used to seize and strongly grip their prey. While they have curved beaks like other birds of prey, an eagle's beak is heavier than others, for better ripping of flesh. Eagles use their keen eyesight to spot prey from above. They eat fish, rodents, and snakes, which they will snatch up and devour in midair or at their eyrie or some other perch. They are known to eat other birds as well. Eagles will even attack prey much larger than themselves - Galdosian dwarves tell stories of seeing eagles carrying mountain goats or deer back to their nests. If an eagle cannot pick up its prey, it will eat it on the ground - many a Galdosian traveler has woken in the morning and emerged from his tent to find an eagle gobbling up the remains of his donkey.
Disposition and Social Habits
Eagles are solitary hunters, until they find a mate. They will mate for life, building the eyrie and raising their young together. Due to the remoteness of their nests, they seldom interact with sentient races, and seem to avoid them and do not consider them as prey. One exception is the fey; fairies have been known to tame eagles for domestic or military use. A prime example is the Champions of O'Ma, whose fey members have been known to ride eagles when scouting or in battle.
Habitat
Eagles build nests, called eyries, on high cliffs. They are most numerous in the mountains of Galdos, where prey is plentiful and the dwarves do not bother them. Though in the north some eagles are known to build their eyries atop tall trees, they are rarely found in the forests of T'Nanshi.
Fylgia
Most compatible: Hawk
- Eagles, like hawks, are a type of bird.
Other notes
It is rumored that giant eagles much larger than the typical breed lair atop the highest of the mountains of Galdos.
