I get asked alot about how one should begin a career in carpentry, especially by those adventurers who wish to be thier own bowyer/fletchers. Well, my business is going well, so I thought I would jot down a few notes for those who are just getting started.

Basic Carpentry.

Carpentry is all about steps, the steps taken to go from a raw branch of wood to a finish product....very few finished items can be made directly from the raw branch, almost all items have an intermediate step, this is required to either achieve the initial shape or to achieve the proper grain orientation before beginning on your finish item.

Carpenters should learn to make planks, staves, both long and short, and sheets from the various woods of avlis. Because from these basic items come the vast majority of the finish products you see for sale in my , and others shops.

Many of these items are needed by other craftsmen, Hilt molds, one of those few items that can be made from the raw wood of the Avlissian Poplar, are needed by weaponscrafters, as they are what are bound in leather on the hilt of every sword out there. Since they are not visible, and act merely as a substrate over which a binding is placed, they are rough and can come straight from working the raw branch.

Weapon handles and Weapon shafts however, are more finished items and must be made from the straight grain of the wood in question, so it is usually recommended that staves be used as the starting point for these items, shafts requiring longer staves than handles do.

One item that many new to carpentry will attempt are shields, small shields are often just planks of wood bound together where larger shields might require a lamination over the planking underneath, novice carpenters should experiment with their own style.

I hope this is of help to those seeking some skill in carpentry, I can be found in my bow Shoppe in the forge district of Elysia, if you want to see the final products, or even use my sawhorses for your own practice.
