Above the Keep - By Lorelai Silvermoon Volume 8

MJ rejoins the waiting riders upon the Keep's tops as the dragons slowly descend onto the scene of their regular briefing and discussion point before training begins in earnest.

Checking firstly for any word from Bronwen or Pyrena, Cole moves into the focus for the days training as he quiets for Finn to add tactical input here and there. The two score dragons then break into their flights of five-dragon groups to work on group maneuvers and flight.

The prevailing methodology being the importance of a diving strike in the opening volleys ... the role of some group positions being to draw the attack of foes while others climb to higher altitudes with enemy engagement for diving, deciding strikes. This as explained, will be far more useful in skirmishing engagement between small groups ... as most that has been seen in the past hundreds of years have been categorized.

For mass conflict, as they are expecting ... the sheer size of the forces engaging may cause such tactics to be moot points ... so instead tight wedge formations are practiced amongst the heavier dragons that may prove beneficial for punching into the enemies mass, and keeping the dragons working close together for support as the melee undoubtedly devolves into a chaotic mess in the skies and ground ... the best they can do is try to work together ...

Those mounted with archers see more focus on strafing runs, combining arrow with wing buffets and breath weapons ...

Training continues as skills heighten, formations tighten, and bonds grow between rider and dragon.

The gathering of dragons today starts out in a light spring rain, however practice pushes ahead. Formations form under the steel grey skies and practice skirmishes take place far and wide around the shinning City on the hill. With near imperceptibility. The gentle mist turns into a steady shower. Still the flight of dragons practice on. A steady wind begins to drive the rain which begins to pulse in gusty sheets. Yet still the practice continues. Eventually there is a crack of light and a roll of thunder. The practice comes to a stuttering halt and confusion over takes the usually well disciplined group as some take to the ground, some back to the roof top and some seem content to continue practicing. A Champion on a gold dragon is seen shouting orders and rounding up the confused mess eventually restoring order.
