Perspective of the Sereg'Wethrin, Vol 2 By Earar Di'Mana

2. Steps too Far

It is commonly known to people who have read on the topic that the Special Forces unit, that became known as the Sereg’Wethrin, originated as a Black Ops military unit of the T’Nanshi Military. Their assignment was to defend T’Nanshi, but through tactics and actions that wouldn't be commonly acceptable by the people of T’Nanshi, or that the Government wouldn't want to have to admit to. Now, just as a side comment, the first mistake in the history of the Sereg’Wethrin seems to have been made by the T’Nanshi government itself. Funding and organizing a secret military force to do tasks that were too dirty for the "good" name of T’Nanshi with which to be associated seems to be hypocritical, and the leaders at the time must not have truly understood that the very act of creating a force to do dark things is in itself dark.

Now, all of this occurred thousands of years ago, and as a military force, the Sereg’Wethrin had served T’Nanshi for a very, very long time. Whether it was a limitation of enhancing equipment, or more likely in addition to that, through the centuries, the Sereg’Wethrin became more and more proficient at magically enhancing their very selves to better suit their role in the defense of T’Nanshi. In this time, sons of T’Nanshi, the very best of the T’Nanshi Army would be recruited, and volunteer to be a part of this force. I'm sure some volunteered because of the power granted, but most did it for their homeland with a strong sense and desire to protect those they loved. I say Sons of T’Nanshi, for whatever reason, the Sereg’Wethrin were an all male military force. This is an important point to note, as will be seen later.

The enhancements, at first were not of the ’tainted’ sort, and were allowed by the T’Nanshi leadership as acceptable methods of making a more effective unit to support T’Nanshi and her people. Though the minds of the soldiers became even more chaotic than normal elves, through strict military training, orders were followed. A balance in this dual nature was achieved only through years of fine-tuning their mental training.

Hundreds of years ago, not long in the history of the Sereg’Wethrin, but long ago even as elves tell time, the M’Chek - T’Nanshi war begun, and thus forever altered the path of the elves in the Sereg’Wethrin. What I deem as the second mistake in the history of the Sereg’Wethrin was made by M’Chek itself by invading the Spiritland, and thus creating a catalyst that propelled the Sereg’Wethrin down a dark path. The Sereg’Wethrin had existed for thousands of years without crossing a line, yet, with the invasion of T’Nanshi by M’Chek, they felt it was necessary and needed to push their practices to what can only be called a breaking point. The intention of this new super-conditioning was born out of a need and desire to be more effective at defending T’Nanshi, but the unintended effects were disastrous for all involved.

To make their soldiers more effective still, this super-conditioning they instituted was a more intense form of mental and physical conditioning. This conditioning crossed a line in morality, and changed the Sereg’Wethrin from an effective military force into a very effective rogue unit outside of the control of T’Nanshi, and no longer willing to follow National orders or acceptable practices. The original mistake of the T’Nanshi leadership had now gotten out of their control. The Sereg’Wethrin stopped fighting the enemies of T’Nanshi, and started fighting humans. This uncontrolled mentality could no longer be in keeping with the core nature of T’Nanshi. I would be dishonest if I didn't pin the 3rd mistake on the Leadership of the Sereg’Wethrin itself. Whether through improper testing prior to full implementation, or for knowingly taking these Sons of T’Nanshi down a path that couldn't be reversed. I'm convinced in my research that the vast majority of the members of the Sereg’Wethrin had no desire or knowledge of what was being done to them. There was a level of trust implied in the role, and this new super-conditioning was viewed as just an enhanced version of what was already done to them. The vast majority of the members of the Sereg’Wethrin were pawns in this major transformation of their unit. By the time the full effects were seen, it was too late for all sides to be able to stop it, or resist it.

I keep returning to the sad truth in that the last members of the Sereg’Wethrin as a Unit in T’Nanshi, the first members of the Sereg’Wethrin the race were all once elves, like you and I. They were all patriots, heroes, volunteers from communities and towns, protecting their families, loved ones, and their nation. They joined not because they wished to hate humans, but because they wished to defend their homes from them. While still a unit of T’Nanshi, they did not kidnap females, nor males and convert them into something else, and they did not have a foreknowledge of what the super-conditioning would do. It is easy to condemn one side or another based on your own background, and seeing the issue from hundreds of years after these things took place, but in trying to understand the thoughts of the people as they went through these events, one must put aside prejudices.

Another sad truth of these events is that no one is completely innocent, and no one completely guilty. Yet here we are hundreds of years later, mostly locked in our viewpoints, unwilling to bend from the positions held by particular sides based on people who’s names we do not know, nor their motivations, nor their efforts to assist, or slow the events that took place that are reviewed in the next chapter, Exile.
