The Order of the Flat Blade was founded by a monk named Ian Dinvion. He ran a small school, with only a few students, on the outskirts of Elysia, near the Forest of Midnight. The order specialized in an unorthodox fighting style that uses the flat sides of bladed weapons to stun and disorient one's foes.

One evening while meditating, Master Dinvion received a vision of two powerful kamas. The next morning he left his eldest student in charge of the small monastery and set out to find the weapons in his vision. He searched far to the west and north, and after many years he finally found the kamas he had seen.

But when he returned to his school, he found it destroyed, his students all slain by undead from the nearby cursed forest. That evening as he mourned the loss of everything he held dear, he himself was accosted by undead, a vampire mage from the forest known as Stellat. Master Dinvion fought, but even the powerful kamas he had quested for could not save him from death at Stellat's hands.

Stellat had no intention of making Master Dinvion a vampire, and she left his corpse to rot. But Ian could not find peace; after locals buried him in Elysia's graveyard, his tortured soul rose as a ghost, seeking revenge on Stellat for all she had taken from him.
