Grease, From the School Of Conjuration
An Analysis of the spell by Flovver Genenburegruasterffersonhoflaust
In the Overground world of Avlis, Grease is commonly overlooked during the preparation of daily spells. Many young followers of Andrinor¡¦s choose "flashy" or "Aggressive" spells from the Evocation or Abjuration schools. However, the wizened Gnomes of Deglos have many uses for the great spell Grease, which is commonly seen as the best spell in Andrinor's First Circle of Magic.
To understand the uses of Grease, one must first become acquainted with the spell: Grease is from the School of Conjuration, and requires both verbal and somatic components. Fortunately, the gesticulations are rather simple and can be easily taught from a scroll. Grease can only be projected a short distance, so the caster must be rather close to your target.
Once the proper body movements and incantations have been completed, the Mage is able to create a fair sized pool of slippery oil. This Magical oil has a weak tie to the material plane; it stays in existence for only a short amount of time. The more experience and power a mage has, the longer the grease will linger.
The practical applications of Grease are many. For example, Grease is frequently used by the Gnomish battlemages. When fighting in the tight tunnels and small caverns of Deglos, Grease can turn the tide of battle quickly by tripping-up or slowing enemies. However, creatures with graceful agility and sure footing can pass through the oil unaffected. Also, the grease will affect all who step into it, so be sure to warn allies before starting the conjuration.
It should be noted that Grease is not used just for combat. It has many uses in Gnomish Artifice as well. Many entrepreneuring young Gnomish Wizards use Grease to fix squeaky hinges or chairs. Sometimes, old metal doors that were rusted shut can also be liberated by this spell. As a mage progresses, more and more uses for this age old favorite can be found. Grease truly is one of Andrinor's Finest.
