Playing The Game

It should be noted that Balors aren't particularly fond of playing Guess the Monster

Guess the Monster is a simple game that involves two characters. The process plays out differently depending on whether or not one wishes to play using die rolls (a Lore check) or simply a Player's knowledge on Avlissian monsters and creatures.

With Die Rolls: This example uses Character A, who is providing the creature and the clues, and Character B, whose job it will be to guess the monster correctly once given the clues.

First, Character A thinks of a creature from Avlis (or any other plane or world, if stipulated). Character A then, using the various properties of the given creature, states three (3) clues to Character B, and it is up to Character B to guess which creature Character A is thinking of.

Behind the scenes, using Tells or another suitable OOC communication format, the PLAYER of Character A will notify the PLAYER of Character B which creature is the correct creature that Character A was thinking of. Character B then makes three die rolls, all using their Lore skill, to see if they can guess the creature correctly.

Their Lore check is matched against the DC given by the player of Character A, which is dependant on how obscure and uncommon the creature is, and how complicated or vague the clues are.

For example: A Crop rat would have a DC of 10-15, since it is common and well known. A spirit of Midnight would have a DC of 20-25, since it is less common and it can be difficult for a less-travelled PC to encounter. A Dracolisk would have a DC of 30-35, because of its rarity and the sheer difficulty for a PC to survive an encounter with.

Without Die Rolls: The method of playing Guess the Monster without die rolls is the same as above, except rather than factoring a character's Lore skill and Intelligence, it is merely up to the player to guess as their character would.

Purpose

Guess the Monster is a game that has been designed to promote character interaction, and to the time between being attacked by chickens at Elf Gate and waiting for your favourite crafting ingredient to spawn. The game can be played for fun, or for In Game stakes, such as Gold and other various prizes.

Origins

In terms of its In Character origin, the game is too simple and too fun to merely place it as being the creation of one particular PC. However, there have been many occurences of Guess the Monster during boring occasions of Roleplaying at Elf Gate, in which conversation has been awkward and forced. Many will recall being bothered by one Erriss Nerivenne, a perky mage that seems too excited and consistently content for her own good.
