Introduction

A bird that blends easily in with the forest. It is rather large and round bellied. Males have a dark head, yellow bill, black streaks on the throat and a rust colored belly. It calls with a chuck or tuck. It's alarm call is a sharp yeep or peep. They also make a chirr that rises in volume and can sound like a laugh or chuckle. It is one of the first birds to sing at dawn. It is preyed upon by hawks, cats and snakes.

Feeding Habits

It eats berries, beetles, grubs, earthworms and caterpillars.

Disposition and Social Habits

They can form large flocks in the winter but tend to nest in pairs during mating season.
