The Brotherhood of Alsahra

During the waning years of The Great War, the majority of orc mages were hastily researching and preparing the final evocation spell that would lead to The Orcish Destruction. This effort was a direct mandate by the Gold Order, and all initiated magic users were required by the Arch Mage to comply with and contribute to the cause. Several prominent figures in the Gold Order did not agree to this proclamation, however. A group of high ranking necromancers among the orcish ranks believed that the theory and research behind the evocation spell was flawed and that it was likely to fizzle, or worse. They also believed that a turnaround strategy would be more effective than a last ditch blowout to take the entire continent with the dying race in the case of a failure. Gathering their necromantic skills, these mages founded the Brotherhood of Alsahra to create an alternate plan for ending the war.

Over a period of several years, the members of the brotherhood devised their plan and began to formulate their research. According to their machinations, the enemy would not be able to fight back if its numbers were decimated through means of a plague. Ergo, their strategy focused on creation of an undead plague that could easily penetrate territorial lines and spread throughout the continent. The vectors of the plague, however, were not initially available. While there were plenty of undead types that could be created through known magical means, nearly all of them were either unintelligent or unable to infect others with their undead state. A new type of undead creature would have the ability to intelligently penetrate enemy lines and begin infecting unsuspecting innocents.

The template creature chosen to carry this out for the brotherhood was the wight. As a semi-intelligent undead fully capable of killing and raising its victims as enthralled wights, it was a smart choice as a starting point. Remaining research focused on imbuing the wight undead type with intelligence and guile. Enhancing the wight proved the be a difficult task, but once the method became available, five brave members of the brotherhood stepped forward as volunteers to become the first bringers of the plague.
