"Tells" refer to contacting the player behind a character In-Game, by clicking on their portrait or simply typing <font style="color:green;">/tell CharacterName</font> or <font style="color:green;">/tell "GameSpyName"</font> (you will need quotation marks in this second case). This should not be used to transfer game information about your character, such that should be learned through In-Character means. They should only be used to talk about things that have nothing to do with the events in the game - with some exceptions, such as to clarify whether what you see is an actual In-Character event or a bug, to deliver information to a DM, etc.

General (Wiki)

What is a wiki?

A wiki (pronounced "wicky" or "weekee") is a type of website that allows users to easily add and edit content and is especially suited for collaborative writing. The Avlis wiki (also know as the Interactive Player Library) is a wiki used for documenting the rules and evolving history of the world of Avlis.

Why should I create an Avlis Wiki account?

The wiki account gives you another way to communicate with the Avlis community. By having the account you can edit pages on the wiki and communicate in a new way with other players. You can organize the characters you play and list known IC information about them on their pages. By adding additional categories you can link yourself and your characters to other groups and concepts on the wiki. You can also use the wiki as a directed form of open communication different from PMing in that everyone can see everything. I am trying to put together a player run matching system and also a mentor system that will take advantage of the wiki. // Note: These remain largerly unused at this point.

You can find lots of general help on the Avlis Wiki in Help:Contents as well as lots of little things to have fun, experiment with and learn how to use the Avlis wiki on Player's Playground.

Other things you get by creating an account and logging in
  • Other users will be able to recognise you by your username when you make changes to pages.
  • You will have your own user page where you can write a bit about yourself
    • And a user talk page which you can use to communicate with other users.
  • You will be able to mark an edit as minor, which avoids inconvenience for other users.
  • You will be able to keep track of changes to modules you are interested in using a watch list.
  • If you choose to give an email address, other users will be able to contact you by email.
    • This feature is anonymous - the user who emails you will not know your email address.
    • You don't have to give your email address if you don't want to.
  • You will be able to move/rename pages.
  • You will be able to set your own preferences, to change things such as:
    • The number of pages displayed in Recent changes
    • The fonts, colours and layout of the site, by using different skins.

How do I add a new wiki page?

Any Avlis Wiki member can write for Avlis Wiki. Just make a link to it somewhere you want to use it (or if you don't know where it will be used just make the link on your user home page) Like this:

Name of my new page

save the page and then click on the red link and you will be in the edit for your new page.

Can I create articles about me or that are my own personal views?

Of course! Registered users have something similar to a 'Folder' for creating these articles. Instead of writing the article in the main namespace, just type User:YourUserName/Your_Article_Name.

How do I rename a page and all (some) of the links to it?

Pages may be renamed by any logged-in user, in the standard configuration. Using the "move" tab a user may enter a new name for a page. A radio-box will allow the talk page to be moved simultaneously to the new talk page. This will also create a redirect to the new name at the old page name.

It's important to check the Special:Whatlinkshere at the new page name to check for broken redirects and links. Any link which has more than one redirect will "break", leaving the browser looking at the wrong page.

How do I make links?

A link is just the name of the page surrounded by double square brackets. It's also possible to make the link display text that is different from that of the link itself:

page name
page names -- suffix text will display as part of the link
display name -- the piped link: hide the page name and display something else
page name (disambiguation) -- the "pipe trick": the part in parentheses will not be displayed.

Note: You don't need to put underscores ("_"), to act as space separators like you see in links. Spaces will work fine.

How do I add a table of contents?

A TOC is added automatically as soon as you have more than three headers. To add one with fewer than four headers, type __FORCETOC__ anywhere on the page or __TOC__ at the position where you want to have the TOC.

To remove a table of contents from a page, add __NOTOC__ to anywhere on the page. The __ character before the commands is two _ characters put together.

How do I delete a page?

If you'd like to delete a page, just add delete to the page, and it will be added to the candidates for deletion list.

What do I do if a page has been defaced or is inappropriate?

You can revert or edit the page yourself. Whether you do this or not, please let a WikiAdmin know this has happend.

What are Private Messages (PMs) and Tells?

"Private messages" are such sent from one user account to another, on the Avlis messageboards/forums. They can be used for both In-Character communication (your character contacting another character, as in writing a letter), and Out-of-Character communication (contacting a player or a DM).

"Tells" refer to contacting the player behind a character In-Game, by clicking on their portrait or simply typing /tell CharacterName or /tell "GameSpyName" (you will need quotation marks in this second case). In-Game Tells should not be used to transfer game information about your character, such that should be learned through In-Character means. They should only be used to talk about things that have nothing to do with the events in the game - with some exceptions, such as to clarify whether what you see is an actual In-Character event or a bug, to deliver information to a DM, etc.

Shouldn't I get the password when I register on the boards?

"I registered an account on the boards, but the servers say I need a password to log in. Shouldn't I get the password when I register on the boards?"

No. You must register for the boards and the servers separately. To register to play on the servers, you must fill out an application and get accepted. The application is found at:

http://www.avlis.org/application.php

If you read the application all the way through, you will note that it can take up to 72 hours to get a response from it.

I sent in an application but haven't gotten a response. What do I do?

In Game

What is a Fed Ex quest ?

These are jobs you can get from NPC's whom you interact with. They normally involve you carrying something to another NPC. They are good for two reasons, firstly you get to understand the local area a bit more and you also gain a reward for doing the task. Most can be performed in complete safety. What does Out Of Character or OOC mean?

This is when you have to say something within the game that has nothing to do with the role you are playing. Examples are: "OOC: I have to go now", "AFK (a phone call)", etc.

They should not be used unless really necessary. If you want to discuss something outside the game then private messages (PMs) can be used or use IRC.
