Actually, this is incorrect. One can be near the epicenter of a Hellball and take no damage whatsoever if you break LOS with the blast point. One of the few area spells that acts like this -- actually the only one I can think of, but I'm probably missing some. I just checked, and it still operates in this fashion after the epic spell changes.

Kinda cool, actually, that you can see the swirly effect before detonation, and run for cover before it explodes.

  • Poorly worded perhaps, but that phrase is meant to refer to Evasion. Specifically: if you get a reflex save from the spell (you're actually caught in the spell), then you will take damage (unlike regular spells that have reflex saves).
If you don't attempt a reflex save, then you were not in the AoE of the spell and thus won't take any damage like everyone else not in the AoE.
As for whether you should be able to "dive for cover" (break LOS), that's surely a debate with passion on both sides.

The NWN Wiki shows hellball as unaffected by spell resistance. Is the Avlis version different, or is the Avlis wiki page on hellball incorrect on that point?
