The left/right menus are reversed (e.g., the right part is the left menu) to make it more intuitive while facing the models. The original part in the pulldown is indented (e.g., [> <part description>]), so you can go back to it without a reset.
# Part tooltips display the part and description on mouseover when the pulldown width isn't wide enough.
# Adjustable part pulldown widths, from 1 to 5 times the original width (limited by your display resolution).
# Per-part coloring. EE allows making material color changes to individual parts. This has been added to the interface with a pop-up color picker for each part ("Use Standard Colors" will go back to using the global material color on that part). These changes will be included in slips and patterns. Any part using per-part coloring will have a green "<span style="color: limegreen;">c</span>" for the per-part coloring button.

# Slips: Tradable consumable "slips" that contain the name (matching the item name and color), the pattern, and list the AC it can be used on in the description. These slip items can be generated at any time by anyone for a fee. They can be used to apply that pattern to another clothing/armor item by anyone (it must be the same AC).
#* The slip is added to the machine before a clothing/armor item. When the clothing/armor is added, it applies the pattern to it automatically.
#* The slip is only destroyed by the machine if you "checkout' (permanently apply changes to) a clothing/armor item that the slip has been used with. The item may be altered further before checkout, and you may use a slip to view a pattern multiple times without destroying it, until the changes are applied permanently. If the item isn't permanently altered, the slip is returned to the machine with the original clothing/armor item.

'''Other NUI details'''
* The NUI will detect when a user has moved too far away, has left the area, or has crashed. This will end the session, returning the original item to the machine.
** A warning pop-up will be displayed if you move too far away, halting your movement. If you ignore it and keep moving, it will end the session.
** The machine will not allow access to its inventory while the NUI is active.

Systems and Tools

Alteration machines can be found throughout Avlis (see below). They aren't hard to find, so just ask.

What does an Alteration Machine look like?

It is usually a Ganoomish machine, or contraption shaped like a pedestal having a glass ball on top. You will see a male model on one side and a female model on the other side. They are there to kindly model your item as you change it. Some alteration machines install golems for the same purpose.

How do you use it?

Clicking on the Ganoomish machine will open like a container, so you place your item into the container. Once you do that, it will present you with a menu of options for what you can do to that type of item. Clothing/Armor uses a new NUI interface (see below for details), while other items use conversation menu options. After you've selected to use either the Male or Female models, they will wear/hold your item as you are working on it. This allows you to see immediately what your changes will look like. When you are finished making your alterations and you have paid your fee, the item will be replaced back onto the machine for you to retrieve.

  • Note: The models will only display items that are visible on a character model.

Clothing/Armor NUI features

The NUI interface adds new features.

  • Note: Feature numbers match the red (#) ones in the image.
Alteration Machine NUI Features.
Alteration Machine NUI Features
  1. Race Chooser.
    • "Like Me" option that copies the operator's appearance.
    • "Like Target" option that lets the operator pick another creature.
  2. Gender, phenotype, and name editing (with colors) directly in the interface.
  3. Global material color changes using a color picker.
  4. Adjustable lights. Level 0 (off) to 3 (bright).
    • Note: Some models have their own light source items. This won't affect them.
  5. Scrollable part pulldowns with symmetry toggling (if it has left/right parts). The left/right menus are reversed (e.g., the right part is the left menu) to make it more intuitive while facing the models. The original part in the pulldown is indented (e.g., [> <part description>]), so you can go back to it without a reset.
  6. Part tooltips display the part and description on mouseover when the pulldown width isn't wide enough.
  7. Adjustable part pulldown widths, from 1 to 5 times the original width (limited by your display resolution).
  8. Per-part coloring. EE allows making material color changes to individual parts. This has been added to the interface with a pop-up color picker for each part ("Use Standard Colors" will go back to using the global material color on that part). These changes will be included in slips and patterns. Any part using per-part coloring will have a green "c" for the per-part coloring button.
    • Note: The game does not display per-part color changes on inventory icons, so you will only see the global material colors. This is a Beamdog issue, and it is doubtful they will add support for it.
  9. Displays the total cost of changes so far, for both self and house work costs.
  10. Slips: Tradable consumable "slips" that contain the name (matching the item name and color), the pattern, and list the AC it can be used on in the description. These slip items can be generated at any time by anyone for a fee. They can be used to apply that pattern to another clothing/armor item by anyone (it must be the same AC).
    • The slip is added to the machine before a clothing/armor item. When the clothing/armor is added, it applies the pattern to it automatically.
    • The slip is only destroyed by the machine if you "checkout' (permanently apply changes to) a clothing/armor item that the slip has been used with. The item may be altered further before checkout, and you may use a slip to view a pattern multiple times without destroying it, until the changes are applied permanently. If the item isn't permanently altered, the slip is returned to the machine with the original clothing/armor item.

Other NUI details

  • The NUI will detect when a user has moved too far away, has left the area, or has crashed. This will end the session, returning the original item to the machine.
    • A warning pop-up will be displayed if you move too far away, halting your movement. If you ignore it and keep moving, it will end the session.
    • The machine will not allow access to its inventory while the NUI is active.

What can be altered?

Visible on model:

  • Armor
  • Weapons
  • Clothing
  • Helms/Hoods
  • Cloaks
  • Shields

Not visible on model:

  • Amulets (Jewelry)
  • Boots
  • Belts
  • Bracers
  • Gloves/Gauntlets
  • Rings (Jewelry)

Some of the alteration machines are limited to altering a certain subset of this list. While others can do them all.

What can NOT be altered?

Of the list of items that can be altered above, you are prohibited from altering items that are marked PLOT. If you would like to have an item alterable while plot, contact Assist DM. Guild items, holy robes, and symbols cannot be altered in this way.

What alterations can I make to an item?

  • Change the name of the item (white text or colored text)
  • Change the color of the item
  • Change the design/model appearance of the item

What skills do I need to be able to use these machines?

No skills are required, just choose the option to pay the house to do the work, and they'll use their in-house expert craftsman to do it for you. You only have to pay the higher fee.

However, if you do have skills in Tailoring, Weaponsmithing, and Armorcrafting, you gain several benefits when performing the alteration using your crafting skills.

How much does it cost to make an alteration?

This depends on whether you pay the house to do the work or use your crafting skills to do the work yourself. Using your crafting skills will be 50% or less of the house price.

It also depends on which type of modification(s) you make to the item, how many modifications you make to the item, and how many modifiable parts there are on the item. The 3 types of modifications each have different costs that are added into the final total fee.

  • Item Renaming - The house price is 150gp for white text and 500gp for colored text.
  • Item Dyeing - The house price for this can be as low as 50gp, and each dye type used will add another charge to the fee.
  • Item Model/Design - this varies widely depending on what you change and the attributes of the item. The low end for the house price is around 300gp.

What happens if I try to make an alteration and it fails?

You pay the fee and try again. The original unaltered item will be returned to the machine.

What other special features are there?

For those PCs that complete alterations using their crafting skills (must have at least 2 levels in the craft to unlock this option), there are several special features/benefits:

  • Once you reach a certain level in a craft, you will achieve 100% success rate on alterations. This level is different for Name-only/Dye-only alterations and alterations that include Model/Design changes.
  • You can earn crafting XP in the relevant skill (10xp 10/week total). Remember that when using your skills, if they are insufficient, you'll fail to complete the alteration. And the alteration must include a model/design alteration for this to apply.
  • You get a discount on the cost of the alteration. This discount improves as your skills increase.
  • You'll be able to save your Tailoring/Armor alterations as Patterns. It will keep track of your patterns, so you can use them later and apply them to other items of the same type.
